DEXTER, Ky. ? A new comic book series based on the popular book and TV series ?Game of Thrones? has been released in comic shops across the country and features the work of Dexter artist Tommy Patterson.
Patterson visited G?s Comics in Murray this week to sign copies of the first issue of the book; a
medieval fantasy that will run 24 issues over the next two years. The ?Game of Thrones? TV show recently completed its first season on HBO. However, ?Game of Thrones,? the comic series is entirely original. It features characters created by George R.R. Martin in his book series ?A Song of Ice and Fire,? but as originally drawn by Patterson for the print graphic arts medium.
Patterson said he was given artistic license in interpreting the appearance of the characters.
?Licensed property is usually pretty tough, but on this I don?t have to draw likenesses (to the TV show),? he said. ?I got to create what?
they all look like. They told me specifically not to make it look like the HBO show.?
A Paris, Tenn. native, Patterson graduated from Murray State University and worked in graphic design at two Murray businesses for about eight years. However, he continued to draw after hours at home with hopes of breaking into the comic art industry. He succeeded with help from his wife, Michelle, and his family.
?There are so many people wanting to do this it?s like a war of attrition,? he said. ?There were so many artists that I knew growing up that just sort of gave up on it. But my mom kept encouraging me and my wife. I couldn?t have done it without them. You really can?t do it without the support of family.?
Patterson said he got his first break in drawing comics when one of his artist friends, who was also working his way up in the industry, introduced him to an art dealer who had contacts with several editors in the business.
?I sent in my portfolio and he started sending my work out,? Patterson said. ?I got a job doing ?Farscape,? It was my first. It was created by the Jim Henson company. The TV show ran for about five years.?
Patterson has also done work on the comic ?Grimm?s Fairy Tales.?
All his work on ?Game of Thrones,? published by Dynamite Entertainment, was done from his home in Dexter.
?That?s the great thing about the Internet. You can do this sort of thing from anywhere now,? he said. ?You can scan it in and send it off. I?m doing this in Dexter and it?ll show up in print shops over in the UK.?
