Large forest fires rage in Greece (AP)

ATHENS, Greece ? Strong winds spread large fires through thousands of hectares (acres) of forest in Greece Friday, despite a large firefighting operation with water-dropping aircraft from other European countries.

Authorities said no injuries or major damage to property were reported from about a dozen major blazes reaching from the northeastern border region of Evros to the southern island of Crete.

A man was convicted of arson through negligence regarding the Evros fire.

Two villages in western and southern Greece were evacuated as a precaution, while flames swept through the ruins of ancient Kalydon in the west, charring trees and blackening some stone walls. The culture ministry said the antiquities suffered no structural damage and would soon be cleaned.

Greece suffers from wildfires every summer, and 76 people died in a spate of blazes in 2007.

But this year finds the country in the throes of a major debt crisis, which has forced extensive state spending cuts over the past 18 months. The sheer number of fires ? more than 150 over the past two days ? and their ferocity forced Athens to request European Union help with more firefighting aircraft, and two planes from France joined the operations on Friday afternoon. A pair of Spanish aircraft was due later in the day.

Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou visited the fire brigade's command center in Athens, accompanied by Public Order Minister Christos Papoutsis who said the situation was tough but manageable.

"This is a very difficult day, as is the coming weekend," Papoutsis said. "The winds are strong and constantly shifting in direction, and unfortunately hamper the fire brigade's efforts. Nevertheless, with constant efforts ... it seems that we will be able to control things."

The largest wildfire was in the Evros area near the Turkish border, which was burning for a third day after destroying 4,500 hectares (11,000 acres) of forest. Smaller blazes that broke out in the heavily militarized area Friday threatened an army ammunition dump before being brought under control.

Vangelis Lambakis, the mayor of the nearby town of Alexandroupolis, said the environmental damage was "incalculable."

A local farmer was convicted Friday of accidentally starting the fire with sparks spewing from his tractor's faulty exhaust pipe.

"The tractor was sowing flames," fire brigade chief Stelios Stefanidis said.

The man was jailed for five years and fined euro20,000, but walked free pending a hearing of his appeal.

Other forest fires were burning on Friday in western parts of the country, the resort island of Zakynthos, and Arcadia in the southern Peloponnese area ? which was ravaged by the deadly blazes in 2007 that laid waste about 100,000 hectares (250,000 acres) of forest.

Firefighters managed to contain fires on Crete, the fringes of Greece's second city of Thessaloniki in the north, as well as a big blaze that threatened homes on the southern outskirts of Athens.

A local fire chief was killed in a blaze on Monday, and the situation deteriorated mid-week as gale-force winds blew over areas desiccated by months of summer heat.

Wildfires also burned through neighboring Albania on Friday, where water-dropping aircraft from Italy and Turkey were assisting firefighters battle hundreds of fires. Some 6,000 hectares (15,000 acres) have been burned so far.

Albania has no firefighting planes of its own.

South Sudan police assault U.N. human rights director (Reuters)

JUBA (Reuters) ? A group of South Sudanese police officers assaulted the human rights director of the United Nations mission in the country last week, sources and internal documents said Thursday.

They said 10 to 14 police officers slapped, kicked and beat Benedict Sannoh, a West African, at Juba's South Sudan hotel on Saturday morning after he refused to let them examine his personal belongings, according to several UN sources.

He was then put into a vehicle and "forced to sit while other police (kicked) him," according to an internal UN security document seen by Reuters.

"We've taken note of this incident. It's a violation of our agreement with the government of South Sudan," UNMISS spokesman Aleem Siddique told Reuters.

"UNMISS is conducting an investigation into the incident."

It was not clear if the assault was related to his work as director of human rights at the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan. The police spokesman was not immediately able to comment.

After being briefly detained in a cell, Sannoh was taken back to the hotel, where his room was searched. He was later taken to a U.N. hospital.

South Sudan won independence from Sudan on July 9 following a January referendum agreed under a 2005 ceasefire which ended decades of civil war.

The new nation is attempting to transform its rebel army into a disciplined security force but is frequently accused of abuses, even within its own recruitment program.

"Violations by the police in South Sudan have been a huge concern for a number of years," Jehanne Henry, a researcher for Human Rights Watch, told Reuters by telephone.

"Events like this underscore the need to improve their behavior, the way they treat civilians and their accountability for abuses against civilians."

This is day three of our blog week and I thought it would be fun to share a little on us! We are Mandy and Gregg a husband and wife team! Even though we are working crazy hours right now we still and will always feel we have the coolest job on the planet! One of my favorite aspects is being able to photograph a couple?s wedding?share those amazing memories and then see them back in a year(s) with a new addition to the family being a new baby or even a pet! We become lifetime photographers to these new families?how cool is that?!? Gregg?s favorite part is the food at weddings?haha! Just kidding?.he is alongside me at weddings shooting and he also handles the front end of our portrait studio business. Most importantly he takes care of my crazy schedule with scheduling portrait sessions and weddings!

We thank God everyday that we?ve been blessed with the resources to travel there throughout those cold New York months to document some beautiful weddings in sunny South Florida! Ahhhhh Sun! Miami is such a spicy city, full of culture, color and of course beaches!

Last time we were there we brought a tripod with us to the beach (as we needed new facebook profile pictures) and set up. Ummmm it?s really not as easy at it looks! Government tries harder to douse graft protests (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? The government on Tuesday stepped up efforts to end national anti-corruption protests led by the ailing 74-year-old social activist Anna Hazare as he entered a second week of fasting.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, under fire for failing to react to the biggest social protests in decades, wrote a personal letter to activist Anna Hazare and called for a meeting of political party leaders to try to end the impasse. A minister also met a Hazare aide for talks.

There were also reports that the finance minister -- one of the country's most experienced and powerful politicians -- was appointed to negotiate with leaders of the protests, but a spokesman for the prime minister denied this.

Self-styled Gandhian activist Hazare has lost nearly six kgs (13.2 lbs) since he began his fast to demand a bill for creating an autonomous anti-corruption agency, a campaign that has drawn support mainly from the middle class against Singh's government.

"Over the last few days, I have watched with increasing concern the state of your health," Singh wrote in a letter.

"At worst, our paths and methodologies may differ, though I do believe that even those differences have been exaggerated."

Hazare's protest prompted the government to introduce the bill into parliament in August, though his supporters have slammed the existing draft as toothless.

The bill is now parked with a parliamentary standing committee. The protesters want the government's draft bill withdrawn and their own version passed by the end of the month, a demand which senior government figures have said is unrealistic and undemocratic.

But in another attempt at compromise, Singh also said in the letter that Hazare's version of the bill could be also be discussed in parliament. There were also reports the government might yield to a key demand to include the prime minister in the

ombudsman's ambit.

Hazare remained lying or sitting on a public stage on open ground in the capital New Delhi for much of the day, surrounded by at least 10,000 supporters in the monsoon heat where open toilets and spilling waste were starting to cause outbreaks of food poisoning and illness.

"We made an attempt," Salman Khurshid, the Law Minister sent to talk with Hazare's team, told reporters after his meeting. "We didn't come with an agenda. So no outcome," he said, adding: "we are trying to understand what the excitement is about and we have heard many things that sadden us."

With key state elections next year that pave the way for a 2014 general election, the government must end a crisis that has paralysed policy making and parliament and added to Singh's unpopularity amid high inflation and corruption scams.

Many of India's middle class, the fastest growing population segment, have joined forces with Hazare to protest a system that requires bribes for everything from driver's licences to birth certificates and a series of graft scandals that have touched top politicians and businessmen in Asia's third largest economy.

By mid-afternoon on Tuesday, thousands had gathered in the muddy, water-logged protest ground in Delhi. As a popular actor led songs and chants on a stage, a large number of students were walking in a procession, or passing by in trucks, shouting anti-government slogans.

Hazare was sitting on a stage, seemingly enjoying the music and waving at the large crowd holding flags. Although visibly weaker, he tried to assure his followers about his health.

"People should continue with this struggle even if I'm not there," he said. "This is our second freedom struggle."

Hazare, who has carried out scores of hunger strikes over the last few decades to pressure governments, has been visited by Hindu gurus, former judges and Bollywood actors. But he has refused to have any politicians on his stage.

His deteriorating health could force the government to decide whether to force feed him -- a move that could spark further protests against a fumbling government of elderly ministers widely seen as out of touch.

"His health is weakening by the hour," Kiran Bedi, a former police officer and one of India's best known anti-graft campaigners who works with Hazare, told Reuters.

"But so far the doctors say he is not in danger."

A group of left and regional party members staged a sit in of parliament on Tuesday, one of two opposition party protests against the government this week. The main Hindu nationalist opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is organising a

nationwide protest against the government on Thursday.

Seeking to pile more pressure on Singh's coalition, the BJP on Tuesday slammed the government's version of the graft bill and called for its withdrawal.

Criticism of Hazare's hunger strike has also surfaced from activists and academics who say it is setting a bad precedent by holding democratic institutions hostage with his uncompromising stand. There have been criticisms from Muslim groups that he is

too close to radical Hindu groups.

Hazare was briefly jailed last Tuesday, a move the government sought to reverse quietly. But he refused to leave prison until the government allowed him to continue his vigil, in public, for 15 days. He was released on Friday to huge cheering crowds and widespread media coverage.

Several scandals, including a telecoms bribery scam that may have cost the government up to $39 billion, led to Hazare demanding anti-corruption measures. But the government bill creating an anti-graft ombudsman was criticised as too weak as it exempted the prime minister and the judiciary from probes.

Oil falls on prospect that Libya crude will return (AP)

NEW YORK ? International oil prices fell Monday on the prospect that exports from Libya will return to the market at a time of economic weakness.

It will be at least several months before Libya is producing enough oil to start exporting it again. But any extra shipments could lower the price of gasoline, which has already come down more than 40 cents a gallon from its peak in May.

Brent crude, which is used to price many international oil varieties, dropped 92 cents to $107.70 per barrel in London. U.S. benchmark crude fell briefly, then rose $1.01 to $83.42 per barrel in New York as traders used a financial strategy to take profits.

Gasoline already has dropped 41 cents from a peak of $3.98 a gallon on May 5 to $3.57 Monday. That's because a slowdown in the global economy has cut demand for crude and fuel. Pump prices could fall as low as $3.25 per gallon by the middle of September.

Now, traders are also considering the possibility that Libya's six-month rebellion could return more oil to markets. Over the weekend, rebels overran forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi and claimed control of much of the nation's capital. Gadhafi's whereabouts were unknown and two of his sons were captured by rebels.

The ouster of Gadhafi, who ruled the North African nation for four decades, would clear the way for a new government and a return to oil production, which stopped during the conflict.

Libya sits on the largest oil reserves in Africa. Before the uprising, it was the world's 12th largest exporter, delivering more than 1.5 million barrels per day to mostly European markets.

How quickly its production can be restart depends on a number of factors, including how fast the rebels form a government and how soon international oil companies move workers back to Libya. It will also take time for the nation's oil fields and pipelines to come up to full speed.

Technicians from Italian oil company Eni were already working to restart oil and natural gas production in Libya, according Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini. Eni is the largest foreign producer in the country.

Eni declined to elaborate on the comments, but noted that restarting production could take some time ? a couple months for natural gas and even a year for oil.

Repsol, another big producer in Libya, was not reachable for comment.

In other Nymex trading for September contracts, heating oil lost less than a penny to $2.8954 per gallon and gasoline futures dropped 3.67 cents to $2.8045 per gallon. Natural gas fell 4.9 cents to $3.891 per 1,000 cubic feet.
