Like mama bears, nursing mothers defend babies with a vengeance

ScienceDaily (Aug. 31, 2011) ? Women who breast-feed are far more likely to demonstrate a "mama bear" effect -- aggressively protecting their infants and themselves -- than women who bottle-feed their babies or non-mothers, according to a new study in the September issue of Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

And when breast-feeding women behave aggressively, they register a lower blood pressure than other women, the study found. The results, the researchers say, suggest that breast-feeding can help dampen the body's typical stress response to fear, giving women the extra courage they need to defend themselves.

"Breast-feeding has many benefits for a baby's health and immunity, but it seems to also have a little-known benefit for the mother," said Jennifer Hahn-Holbrook, a postdoctoral fellow in the UCLA Department of Psychology and the study's lead author. "It may be providing mothers with a buffer against the many stressors new moms face while at the same time, giving mothers an extra burst of courage if they need to defend themselves or their child."

But the aggression demonstrated by breast-feeding mothers has its limits, Hahn-Holbrook added.

"Breast-feeding mothers aren't going to go out and get into bar fights, but if someone is threatening them or their infant, our research suggests they may be more likely to defend themselves in an aggressive manner," she said.

The breast-feeding mothers' reaction is known as "lactation aggression" or "maternal defense" in mammals.

Hahn-Holbrook was aware that non-human female mammals, including macaques, rats, mice, hamsters, lions, deer, sheep and others, display more aggression when they are lactating than at any other reproductive stage, but she couldn't find any research that tested that reaction in people. So she decided to set up the first experiment to study lactation aggression in humans.

For the study, researchers recruited three groups of women -- 18 nursing mothers, 17 women who were feeding formula to their babies and 20 non-mothers. Each woman was asked to compete in a series of computerized time-reaction tasks against a research assistant posing as an overtly rude study participant. The women's infants were supervised in an adjoining room.

Upon winning a round in the competition, the victor was allowed to press a button and deliver a loud and lengthy "sound blast" to the loser -- an act of aggressiveness. The researchers found that breast-feeding mothers delivered sound blasts to the rude research assistant that were more than twice as loud and long as those administered by non-mothers and nearly twice as loud and long as those by bottle-feeding mothers. This was true both before and after the breast-feeding mothers nursed their infants.

The researchers also measured participants' stress levels via blood pressure during the experiment. Breast-feeding mothers' systolic blood pressure was found to be approximately 10 points lower than women who were feeding formula to their infants and 12 points lower than non-mothers.

Previous research in non-human mammals has shown that lactation enables heightened defensive aggression by down-regulating the body's response to fear, a phenomenon that benefits the survival of both mothers and their offspring. The lower blood pressure seen in the breast-feeding mothers during acts of aggression, the researchers say, is an indication that the same mechanism is likely at work in humans as well.

Co-authors of the study included Julianne Holt-Lunstad, a psychology professor at Brigham Young University; Colin Holbrook, a postdoctoral fellow and research associate in the UCLA Department of Anthropology; Sarah Coyne, a professor of family life at Brigham Young University's School of Family Life; and Ernest Lawson, a professor at Queen's University Belfast.

India anti-graft activist to end fast after government (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? A self-styled Gandhian activist whose campaign against corruption sparked some of India's biggest anti-government protests in decades will end a 13-day hunger strike Sunday after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh caved in to his demands.

The 74-year-old Anna Hazare has tapped a groundswell of public anger against endemic corruption, uniting the country's bulging middle-class against a hapless political class and underlining voter anger at Singh and the ruling Congress party.

India's parliament Saturday backed landmark anti-corruption legislation, meeting Hazare's key demands. Tens of thousands of mostly urban and wired voters across India will claim victory in an unprecedented movement that may usher in a new force in Indian politics and hit the ruling Congress party hard in crucial state elections next year.

"I feel this is the country's victory... Tomorrow at 10 am I want to publicly break my fast," Hazare told over tens of thousands of cheering supporters Saturday evening at a protest site in New Delhi that has become the epicenter of a nationwide crusade.

"Only half of the battle has been won, there is still some of it left," a weak-looking Hazare told the crowd.

Hazare and his team of social activist aides led a rousing rendition of the Indian national anthem as supporters waved national flags and celebrated almost a fortnight of protest.

The veteran activist, whose health had seriously deteriorated as his weight fell, made the announcement after a specially-convened session of parliament ended with lawmakers backing a resolution by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to push for a law to create an independent ombudsman with wide-ranging power to investigate lawmakers, the judiciary and bureaucrats.

Undermined by graft scandals and seen as out-of-touch with voters battling high inflation, Congress' failure to deal with Hazare's campaign before it became a national issue spells danger for the ruling party in state polls next year ahead of the 2014 general election.

While protests in India are not uncommon, the sight of many well-off young professionals using Twitter and Facebook taking to the streets of Asia' third-largest economy suggest an awakening of a previously politically-ambivalent middle-class.

PARLIAMENT RESOLUTION

Mukherjee Saturday said parliament agreed to demands from Hazare to bring civil servants under the proposed agency's authority alongside parliament and the judiciary, ensure similar agencies at a state level and create a citizen's charter.

"We are at a crossroads, let us try to find a solution within the constitutional framework without violating the supremacy of Parliament," Mukherjee told the lower house.

Support for Mukherjee's resolution came after a grueling day of fractious debate in both chambers that highlighted just how much Hazare's campaign and the public support for it had rocked India's political establishment.

Hazare's trademark white cap has been sported by thousands of protesters across the country, and the slogan "I am Anna" has become a rallying cry for a generation of young people disillusioned by their graft-stained politicians.

Hazare is not some out-of-the-blue phenomenon, however. Deep-seated change has been underway for years in India as its once-statist economy globalizes, bolstered by a widely used freedom of information act, aggressive private media and the election of state politicians who have rejected traditional caste-support bases to win on governance issues.

After a botched arrest as part of a hardline approach to Hazare, a government U-turn saw ministers praise the activist, suggesting a leadership deficit in Congress without party head Sonia Gandhi, who is recovering after surgery for an undisclosed condition.

Congress pledged a slew of economic reforms after winning re-election in 2009 that would have made foreign investment easier and tax collection more effective. But graft and anger over inflation has stymied attempts to debate the legislation.

Transparency International rates India in 87th place on the most corrupt countries, according to a 2010 survey.

Several scandals linked to the government, including a bribery scam involving the granting of telecom licenses that led to the arrest of a telecoms minister and may have cost the state up to $39 billion in lost revenues, led to Hazare's latest protest.

Congress has staked a large amount of political capital on victory in next year's state election in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, where a disappointing result would ring serious alarm bells for the federal ballot in 2014.

Hazare became the unlikely thorn in the side of the government when he went on hunger strike in April. He called off that fast after the government promised to introduce a bill creating an anti-corruption ombudsman.

The so-called Lokpal legislation was presented in early August, but activists slammed the draft version as toothless because the prime minister and judges were exempt from probes.

Galileo Galilei ? the "father of modern astronomy"

Galileo Galilei (1564 ? 1642) was Galilao as he made ??improvements on the telescope, which was invented by Hans Lippershey "father of modern observational astronomy.". He used the telescope observations of sunspots, lunar mountains and valleys, the four largest moons of Jupiter and the phases of Venus to make.

He has also to a method for determining longitude at sea worked, with the positions of the satellites of Jupiter. In 1609, Galileo had built a telescope20-times magnification, with which he discovered mountains and craters on the moon. He saw that the Milky Way was made of stars. Later, he did what was 30-fold magnification.

Today astronomers have telescopes that are much bigger than anything used by Galileo. The $ 120 million Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) is sitting at 10,400 feet on Mount Graham in Arizona. Its components are manufactured in various countries around the world including USA, Italy and Germany. It was setCommissioning in October 2005. This telescope combines light from two mirrors to simulate a single telescope with a mirror. When it was put into operation, the astronomers used the LBT with a single primary mirror. That same year, the second mirror was put into operation.

Galileo, the "father of modern observational astronomy," do not have the equipment or the modern technology of today LBT, but the way for modern astronomy. There are many telescopesare similar to Galileo used. Many of them are small enough to be used in a backyard observatory.

Learn the Different EFT Tapping Points

Feeling uneasy? Is there something that is weighing your mind lately? These are very good signs that your emotional energy is out of balance. EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a mild, non-evasive form of emotional acupressure using ancient Chinese acupuncture points. Tapping or rubbing particular points on the upper body releases the stuck energy that holds strong emotions in place and keeps you feeling stressed and anxious. Essentially, you will use two fingers to tap on a sequence of acupressure points around your upper body. While you are EFT tapping, you will alter into your thoughts regarding an issue which is bothering you.

Identify the problem that is troubling you right now. Then tap on the following points:

Karate chop is the place you tap while you say your EFT tapping set-up. You start your tapping technique with some variation of ?Even though I have this problem, I accept myself anyway.? Tap on the fleshy outer edge of either or both hands. During the EFT session, most practitioners begin with the eyebrow point and work down the face and torso and end at the top of the head. Tap right at the beginning of one or both eyebrows.

Tap on the bony ridge just outside the eye and on the softer temple. This EFT tapping area is the starting or end point of three different bilateral acupuncture meridians. The more meridians you stimulate, the more likely you are to obtain energy moving in the meridian where it might be stuck. Tap right on the bony area just beneath the eye. This is the beginning point of the Stomach Meridian. Tap between the nose and mouth. This EFT tapping point is the end point of the Governing Meridian.

Tap in the dip between your lower lip and the chin. The chin point is the ending point of the Central Meridian. This meridian is important in keeping your energy flowing in a positive direction and keeping you resistant to others? negativity or criticism. Find the collarbone point by first tracing your clavicle to the center notch. Tap about four inches below the armpit tight in the middle of your side, along your shirt seam. This EFT tapping point is the Spleen Meridian.

Find out more about the different tapping points through visiting the EFT therapy website.

Want to find out more about EFT? Then be sure to visit EFT Therapy website and learn more about EFT and what it can do for you.

The FSBO Myth ? Rochester Real Estate Expert

Post

In Uncategorized on August 25, 2011 by svindigni

Real estate transactions can be tricky. The widespread myth that selling real estate is easy has lured many home sellers into making expensive mistakes by trying (and failing) to sell their own home.

Many people assume that all you need is a sales contract, a classified ad and a ?For Sale? sign. But even the most basic step ? setting the correct sale price ? depends on a number of factors. The location, size and condition of your home, the relationship between the local supply of homes and the number of qualified buyers, and the recent selling prices of comparable homes in your neighborhood all affect the market value of your property. Homeowners who sell without a professional realtor often misread the local market and overprice the home.

Sellers might also mishandle contingencies, home inspections, title clearance, deadlines and disclosures. The advice and guidance of an experienced real estate agent is essential to ensure that you avoid the risk of expensive litigation and ensure a successful home sale.
