BANGOR, Maine ? An advocate for diabetes awareness and wellness will speak at noon Thursday at Husson University?s Gracie Theatre.
Andy Holder, better known as ?Iron Andy,? was a 36-year-old husband and father of two young sons when he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, or insulin-dependent diabetes, in 2005, according to a Husson press release issued last week.
Holder, who lives in Shippack, Pa., also is a dedicated body builder. Determined to beat diabetes, he taught himself how to swim and trained hard to complete seven Ironman competitions ? a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a marathon run of 26.2 miles. When he decided to compete in Ironman competitions, Holder didn?t know how to swim and didn?t own a bicycle, according to his website, ironandyfoundation.org.
When he?s not competing, Holder travels the country delivering inspirational speeches and urging people diagnosed with diabetes to maintain positive attitudes. His appearances, including the one at Husson, are sponsored by Good Neighbor Pharmacy, a national network of pharmacies based in Valley Forge, Pa.
?These pharmacies do a lot of work with diabetes and have designated diabetes training in their stores,? Holder told the Times Herald, a Norristown, Pa., newspaper, in July 2011. ?They thought my story was a great vehicle to create this national marketing campaign that would not only inspire people with diabetes, but also educate people on how helpful a pharmacy could be for someone with diabetes. They created a campaign around my story called ?Managing Diabetes: Living without Limits.??
Holder?s foundation raises funds to send children with diabetes to camp.
Immediately after his presentation at Husson, Holder will lead about 100 Husson pharmacy students, decked out in white coats, on a 1-mile walk around the Husson circle to kick off their ?Walk to New Orleans? project.
The 1,763-mile virtual walk is being undertaken as part of National Pharmacy Month and will be part of the American Pharmacists Association?s Operation Heart project, in which the Husson chapter is participating, according to the press release. Each chapter member will be responsible for tracking his or her walking mileage. The chapter goal is to have walked the more than 1,700 miles to New Orleans by March, when the association is holding its annual conference in the Big Easy.
?We are thrilled to have such a renowned diabetes awareness and wellness advocate on our campus to not only speak to our students, but help them kick off the ?Walk to New Orleans? project,? Eric Jarvi, associate dean of the School of Pharmacy, said in the press release. ?The 1-mile kickoff demonstrates that our students will not only graduate from our program with outstanding skills in the practice of pharmacy, but will also have a clear understanding of the importance of promoting wellness and healthy living.?

Publicist calls rumors 'stupid, ridiculous and false.'

Beyonce in the "Countdown" video

Beyoncé has had to deal with dozens of scurrilous, absurd and outlandish rumors over the course of her career. And like most stars, she has ignored the majority of them, responded to some and mostly just let the talkers talk. But after the Internet blew up earlier this week with rumors that the pregnant singer was sporting what some were calling a "fake" baby bump during a recent TV appearance, enough was enough.
Beyoncé's publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, told ABC News on Tuesday that the allegations are "stupid, ridiculous and false." The rumors were sparked by an appearance Beyoncé made on Australia's "Sunday Night HD" in which her midsection seemed to deflate and fold over in an odd manner when she sat down for an interview while wearing a loose-fitting red dress.
It was during that appearance that Beyoncé — who revealed her pregnancy at the 2011 VMAs — confirmed that the child she is expecting with hubby Jay-Z is due in February. "I just feel like it's time and I'm very grateful that God has blessed me with the biggest gift any human can have," B said during the interview. "If there's any time, right now is the time, and I'm so happy."
Before the bump-troversy erupted, Beyoncé told Harper's Bazaar that she doesn't get worked up over gossip. "I am finally at the stage in my life where I am not so concerned with other people's opinions about my life decisions," she said. "It is really liberating to know what I want, to know what truly makes me happy."
And while the super-couple have always kept their private life off limits, the "Countdown" singer did reveal a bit about her relationship with Jigga in the November issue of the magazine.
"We took our time and developed an unbreakable friendship before we got married. ... But like anything great and successful in your life, marriage takes hard work and sacrifice," she said. "It has to be something both you and your husband deeply want. The best thing about marriage is the amount of growth you have because you can no longer hide from your insecurities. There's someone right there calling you out on your flaws and building you up when you need the support. If you are with the right person, it brings out the best version of you."

The Journal of Visualized Experiments
The Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) will partner with Carl Zeiss Microscopy to support the sharing of scientific information through open access.
JoVE is the first and only peer-reviewed video journal indexed in PubMed and MEDLINE. Zeiss, a world-leading manufacturer of microscope technology based in Germany, will sponsor the publication of three open access video articles. For the three articles selected for publication, the JoVE team will film and edit the video article. Though the cost of the video is being sponsored, the final articles will undergo the same rigorous peer-review process as other JoVE content.
"Because these videos will be open to the public, this partnership with Zeiss will enable access to content that otherwise wouldn't be available," said Dr. Phill Jones, Editorial Director at JoVE.
Video publication is especially effective for demonstration of microscopy research techniques.
"As learning new techniques from written protocols can be challenging, Carl Zeiss Microscopy launched a campaign to support publication of a select number of microscropy protocols in JoVE," said Strategic Marketing Manager at Zeiss, Dr. Maya Everett.
"Our goal is both to support our customers who wish to publish in this video format as well as provide important training tools to scientists who are new to these techniques."

LOS ANGELES - Eva Longoria says she lent her support to "The Harvest," a documentary about child migrant laborers, not just because of her Latin American roots but also because she wants to know where her food comes from and take responsibility for it.
Much of the harvesting work in the United States is done by migrants from Latin America, especially Mexico. But Longoria's interest in the subject didn't spring from her roots, but from concern over children growing up in the fields, the "Desperate Housewives" star says.
"I'm ninth-generation Mexican-American. We have ranches in Texas but you don't have to have that to have compassion," Longoria said. "I eat food and I'm a responsible human being and if you are responsible, you have to know where your food comes from."
Longoria said a quarter of food eaten in the United States is harvested by children. That estimate could not be immediately confirmed by The Associated Press. Human Rights Watch reported in 2010 that at least 10 percent of hired farm laborers in the United States were under 18, but said that accurate numbers were hard to come by.
The documentary says that more than 400,000 children work in U.S. farm fields.
"You have to be aware of the practices that are used to get the food we are eating," said the actress, who as executive producer of "The Harvest," raised nearly $1 million for the film, which will be released on DVD Tuesday.
"I've been involved with farm workers advocacy for a long time," she said, "but I recently found out, I didn't know there were so many children working legally in the fields."
"The Harvest" tells the story of three children who work as field laborers in Florida, Michigan and Texas to help their parents.
In the film, one of them, 12-year-old Zulema Lopez, notes that she started working at such a young age, she doesn't even remember her first day. She adds that picking onions in Texas from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., she made $64 a week.
The child field workers work under an unforgiving sun and in paralyzing cold and run the same risks and suffer the same deprivations as adult laborers, the film shows. Lopez, for example, recounts how she had to throw dirt on a wound to stop it from bleeding. The film also explains how migratory work makes it difficult for children to receive a proper education.
The film has been shown to members of Congress to put a face on a bill sponsored by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, D-Calif., that would raise the minimum age for field work in the U.S. from 12 to 14 years. It also seeks to create penalties for labor infractions against young field workers and reduce their exposure to pesticides.
"We want to use the film to change policy," Longoria said. "Children shouldn't have to choose between school and work."
Longoria says the most touching scene of the film for her is one in which Lopez fears she'll have to work in the fields her entire life, remarking, "I don't even think about having dreams."
"That was heartbreaking," Longoria said. "Her grandmother works in the fields, her mother works in the fields, and she feels stuck and does not see herself leaving the fields."

Commercial Real Estate services firm Jones Lang LaSalle has substantially deepened its foothold in the Pacific Northwest overnight with the merging of operations with Pacific Real Estate Partners Inc.
In the nearly 20 years since its formation, Pacific Real Estate has risen to the top of the heap in the Pacific Northwest?s real estate services industry. With a team of 49, the firm offers cultivated expertise in the leading Puget Sound markets, including metropolitan Seattle, Tacoma and Portland, and extending into neighboring Vancouver, B.C.
The firm?s past successes include the repositioning and lease-up of One Main place in Portland for RREEF, which had acquired the 315,000-square-foot office tower in August 2006 when the tenant roster was only 21 percent full. Twenty-four months later, Pacific Real Estate had boosted the occupancy level up to 97 percent. It also facilitated the $72.5 million sale of the 197,000-square-foot 5th & Bell office property in Seattle to Hines on behalf of Touchstone Seattle Venture II in 2007, drumming up enough attention through marketing to facilitate a three-round bidding war for the building, which had a 16.5 percent shell-condition vacancy and a 2/3 ground lease.
Pacific Real Estate comes to the table with a solid proficiency in investment sales and landlord and tenant representation in the office, industrial and retail sectors, all of which will be combined with JLL?s skills in project and development services and multifamily investment sales.
?The merger of Jones Lang LaSalle and Pacific Real Estate Partners was driven by client demand for broader and deeper services, as well as the anticipated growth of the Pacific Northwest,? Elizabeth Hearle, Northwest Market Director, JLL, noted in a prepared statement. ?While this is a mutually beneficial merger for Pacific Real Estate Partners and Jones Lang LaSalle, the real beneficiaries are our clients who will now have access to a broader platform and local market expertise from a firm that is the clear leader in the market.?

TUNIS (Reuters) ? Islamists stormed a university in Tunisia Saturday after it refused to enrol a woman wearing a full-face veil, a staff member said, highlighting tensions over religion that are likely to dominate an election later this month.
Tunisia votes on October 23 in the first election since a revolution that inspired the "Arab Spring" uprisings. The vote has pitted Islamists against secular Tunisians who say their liberal values are under threat.
"The General Secretary of the university was attacked this morning with extreme violence by a group of religious extremists," said Moncef Abdul Jalil, a faculty head at the university of Sousse, about 150 km (93 miles) south of the Tunisian capital.
About 200 people protested outside the faculty, and then stormed the building carrying banners demanding students' right to wear a veil, Abdul Jalil was quoted as saying by Tunisia's official TAP news agency.
"This serious incident caused a state of terror and panic in the ranks of college students and professors," he said.
Witnesses told Reuters that, after the incident, a large security force contingent surrounded the faculty building to prevent any further attacks.
The clashes in Sousse provoked a storm of anger among secularists on social networking website Facebook.
Following online calls for a counter-protest, about 200 women gathered in El-Menzah, a northern suburb of the capital, to protest against religious violence, witnesses said.
A former French colony, Tunisia has a long history of secularism and liberal attitudes.
That has been challenged since autocratic president Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali was swept from power in January, and conservative Muslims were free to express their views and adopt the outward trappings of their beliefs.
Under Ben Ali rule, thousands of people who were suspected of membership of an Islamist political group or who followed strict interpretations of Islam were arrested.
The full-face veil -- known as the niqab -- is rarely seen on Tunisia's streets but it has been one of the subjects of debate between Islamists and secularists.
The Education Ministry decided to ban students from wearing the niqab at the start of the academic year.
The Islamist Ennahda party is expected to win the biggest share of the vote on October 23, when Tunisians are to choose an assembly which will draft a new constitution.
Ennahda leader Rachid Ghannouchi told Reuters in an interview his party would uphold women's rights and not try to impose strict Muslim values on society.
