Groupon acts locally with $10 credit offer (AP)

NEW YORK ? Groupon is thinking locally. The online deals site is offering a $10 credit to the first 150,000 people who purchase a local Groupon by Dec. 24.

The offer looks like a response to a recent promotion by Amazon that critics said hurt brick-and-mortar businesses. Last Saturday, Amazon.com Inc. gave shoppers a $5 discount if they used its Price Check app inside retail stores to find lower prices on its website.

Groupon CEO Andrew Mason said the offer is not a jab at Amazon. Rather, he said it's a symbolic gesture to show people they can both save money and support local businesses.

"I think people have over the years come to believe that they have to make this difficult choice between supporting local businesses...or getting a great price," he said. "Groupon is here to remind people that they can do both."

EBay Inc. is also weighing in. It's giving people a $10 credit to shop in stores if they spend $100 online at three retailers, including Toys R Us.

Mason, who's now been at the helm of a public Groupon for more than a month, said his job feels "very much the same" post-IPO. Though now there's a "this kind of funny line," he said, that gets drawn about the company on finance websites. That, and "I've gotten really into Scientology," he joked.

Migrant ship sinks off Indonesia; over 200 missing (AP)

JAKARTA, Indonesia ? Rescuers battled high waves Sunday as they searched for 200 asylum seekers missing and feared dead after their overcrowded ship sank off Indonesia's main island of Java. So far only 33 people have been plucked alive from the choppy waters.

Two were children, aged 8 and 10, found clinging to the broken debris of the boat five hours after the accident Saturday.

"It's really a miracle they made it," said Kelik Enggar Purwanto, a member of the search and rescue team, as horrifying accounts emerged of the disaster.

Nearly 250 people fleeing economic and political hardship in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Turkey were trying to reach Australia in search of a better life when they ran into a powerful storm 20 miles (32 kilometers) off Java's southern coast on Saturday.

After being slammed by a 15-foot- (3-meter-) high wave, the fiberglass ship ? carrying more than twice its capacity ? broke apart, survivors said, disappearing tail first into the dark waters.

Soon after, 25-year-old local fisherman, Jambe, spotted several dark dots from his own tiny wooden fishing vessel and decided to investigate.

He and his three-member crew were horrified at what they found: more than 100 hysterical and exhausted people clinging to anything that floated.

Survivors immediately started racing toward them.

"They were all fighting, scrambling to get into my boat," Jambe told The Associated Press, adding there was only room for 10.

In the end he managed to get 25 on board, many of them injured and all begging for water to drink.

Those left behind were screaming and crying.

"I'm so sad ... I feel so guilty, but there were just too many of them," said Jambe, who like many Indonesians uses only one name. "I was worried if we took any more we'd sink, too."

Indonesia, a sprawling nation of 240 million people, has more than 18,000 islands and thousands of miles (kilometers) of unpatrolled coastline, making it a key transit point for smuggling migrants.

Many risk a dangerous journey on rickety boats in hopes of getting to Australia, where they face years in crowded, prison-like detention facilities. Australia's harsh immigration policy has loosened up in recent months, however.

Those on the ship that sank Saturday had passed through Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, days earlier without any legal immigration documents, according to police.

An unidentified group loaded them onto four buses and took them to a port, promising to get them to Australia's tiny Christmas Island.

Local television showed a half-dozen survivors at a shelter in Trenggalek, the Javanese town closest to the scene of the sinking, some with dazed, empty expressions as they sat on the floor drinking and eating.

Several others were taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Khadzim Huzen, a 30-year-old Afghani, told the AP that after the big wave hit, the ship started tipping into the water, and everyone rushed to the front.

A fight broke out for life jackets.

There were only 25, he said, and nine already had been taken by the crew.

"In the end, as everything was being swallowed up by the water, we just grabbed hold of anything we could," he said. "We formed small groups in the water and tried to help each other stay afloat."

At Prigi, the nearest port, several members of the national search and rescue team were getting ready to head out to sea, empty body bags stacked up on the deck, local television footage showed.

Lt. Alwi Mudzakir, a maritime police officer, said so far 33 people have been rescued, many suffering from severe dehydration and exhaustion.

He was worried ? as the hours passed ? that no one else would be found alive.

Weather was bad Sunday and four fishing boats, two helicopters and a navy ship already involved in the operation were battling 4-meter- (13-foot-) high waves.

"They have scoured a 50-mile (80-kilometer) radius but haven't found anything," Mudzakir said, adding that currents were very strong.

Last month, a ship carrying about 70 asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan capsized off the southern coast of Central Java province, and at least eight people died.

'Batman' star Bale tries to visit China activist (AP)

BEIJING ? "Batman" star Christian Bale, in the midst of promoting a film he made in China that some critics have called propaganda, was physically stopped by government-backed guards from visiting a blind activist living under house arrest ? with a CNN crew in tow to record the scuffle.

CNN posted footage of the confrontation on its website Friday.

The run-in and publicity is likely to cause discomfort in China's government-backed film industry, which hopes Bale's movie "The Flowers of War" will be a creative success at home and abroad. The star's actions are sure to focus attention on the plight of Chen Guangcheng, guarded around the clock by burly, aggressive security men who have blocked dozens of reporters and fellow activists trying to see him in the past.

Bale was to leave China on Friday and his representatives could not immediately be reached for comment.

Bale, who won a best supporting actor Oscar for last year's "The Fighter," traveled Thursday with a crew from CNN to the village in eastern China where Chen, the blind lawyer, lives with his family in complete isolation.

They were stopped at the entrance to Dongshigu village in Shandong province by unidentified men.

The video footage shows Bale asking to see Chen, with a CNN producer providing interpretation, but being ordered by one of the guards to leave. He then asked why he was unable to pass through. The guards responded by trying to grab or punch a small video camera Bale was carrying.

"What I really wanted to do was to meet the man, shake his hand and say what an inspiration he is," Bale was quoted as saying by CNN.

Chen's case has been raised publicly by U.S. lawmakers and diplomats, including Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, all to no response from China.

CNN said Bale first learned of Chen from news reports when he was in China filming "The Flowers of War," China's official submission this year for best foreign language film Oscar.

"Chen Guangcheng is a newsworthy figure ... and as such it is in the interest of CNN's global viewers to hear from him," CNN said in a statement. "Mr. Bale reached out to CNN and invited us to join him on his journey to visit Chen."

Chen, a self-taught lawyer who was blinded by a fever in infancy, angered authorities after documenting forced late-term abortions and sterilizations and other abuses by overzealous authorities trying to meet population control goals in his rural community. He was imprisoned for allegedly instigating an attack on government offices and organizing a group of people to disrupt traffic, charges his supporters say were fabricated.

Although now officially free under the law, he has been confined to his home in the village eight hours' drive from Beijing and subjected to periodic beatings and other abuse, activists say.

While Bale's visit focuses new attention on Chen's case, CNN's role raises questions about activism and advocacy among reporters, said David Bandurski, editor of the China Media Project website at the University of Hong Kong.

"It made me instantly uncomfortable, wondering how it all came together. It raises questions about where the lines are drawn," Bandurski said.

The incident also drew strong interest ? most of it highly positive ? on social networking sites such as Twitter and its Chinese equivalent, Weibo.

Having their star's name pinging across the Internet in connection with such a politically sensitive subject puts promoters of "The Flowers of War" in a bind. The film opens in China on Friday and next week in the United States.

Directed by the renowned Zhang Yimou, it is also the most expensive Chinese movie ever made, at $94 million, some of which came from the state-owned Bank of China.

The movie centers on the 1937 sacking of the eastern city of Nanjing, a central event in China's pre-revolutionary "century of humiliation" and has been described by some critics as hewing to official propaganda portraying Chinese as heroic victims and Japanese as one-dimensional cartoon villains.

While China has the world's third-largest film industry ? both in box office and output ? it has made relatively little global impact. Story lines are often heavily influenced by the ruling Communist Party, whose culture commissars must approve scripts and have final say over whether a film gets released.

Clooney vs. Gosling: Who should win? (omg!)

FILE - In this Sept. 27, 2011 file photo, director, writer, and cast member George Clooney, right, and cast member Ryan Gosling pose together at the premiere of "The Ides of March", in Beverly Hills, Calif. Clooney and Gosling both received multiple nominations for Golden Globe awards on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011. Gosling was nominated for best actor in a motion picture drama for his role in "The Ides of March," and best actor in a comedy film for his role in "Crazy, Stupid Love." Clooney was nominated for best actor in a motion picture drama for his role in "The Descendants," and as best director for "The Ides of March." (AP Photo/Matt Sayles, file)

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? George Clooney vs. Ryan Gosling ... it really is a matter of personal preference, isn't it? And maybe it's a generational thing, too.

Both actors are sexy and gorgeous, of course, but both also have chosen difficult film roles that intentionally play down their looks. Both ooze movie-star charisma but both have displayed versatility, as well.

And both will be competing in the category of best actor in a drama at the Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 15; nominations were announced Thursday morning. Clooney is up for "The Descendants," in which he plays a father struggling to raise his two daughters while his wife is in a coma; Gosling is up for "The Ides of March," in which he plays a cunning campaign strategist for a democratic presidential hopeful ... played by Clooney. (Gosling also received a nomination for best actor in a comedy for playing a ladies man in "Crazy, Stupid, Love.")

Perhaps a little tale of the tape can help us determine an early winner:

AGE: Clooney just turned 50 this year; Gosling is 31.

HEIGHT: Clooney is 5-foot-10; Gosling is 6-foot-1.

HOMETOWN: Clooney was born in Lexington, Ky.; Gosling grew up in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada.

MOST IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE: For Clooney, it's so hard to choose, simply because he's been around longer and made more movies. Maybe "Syriana" (see below) because it was so demanding both physically and emotionally. But man, is he great in "Michael Clayton." As for Gosling, he had to dig deep for "The Believer" (2001), in which he played a Jewish man who becomes an anti-Semitic skinhead. It was an early indication of his vast talent. But man, is he great in "Blue Valentine."

MOST OUT-THERE PERFORMANCE: Clooney showed his goofy side as a smooth-talking escaped convict in the Coen brothers' 2000 comedy "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Gosling fell in love with a life-sized doll named Bianca in 2007's "Lars and the Real Girl."

BRUSHES WITH OSCAR: Clooney packed on the pounds, grew a shaggy beard and became virtually unrecognizable to play a CIA operative in 2005's "Syriana," which earned him the Academy Award for best supporting actor. That same year, he also was nominated for directing and co-writing the TV news drama "Good Night, and Good Luck." Since then, he's earned two other best-actor nominations: for "Michael Clayton" (2007) and "Up in the Air" (2009). Gosling was a surprise nominee for 2006's "Half Nelson" ? not because he was undeserving, far from it, but because it was such a small, little-known film. He played a middle-school teacher with a drug problem.

EMBARRASSING BEGINNINGS: Clooney rocked the mullet in the mid-'80s on the sitcom "The Facts of Life," where he played a handyman named George. Gosling was a member of "The Mickey Mouse Club" in the early 1990s, around the same time as Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

"SEXIEST MAN ALIVE" STATUS: Clooney has the rare distinction of winning the annual honor from People magazine twice: in 1997 and 2006. Gosling hasn't won ? yet ? but this year's winner, Bradley Cooper, has conceded that Gosling deserved the title more than he did.

ON-SCREEN ROMANCES: Clooney: Michelle Pfeiffer ("One Fine Day"); Jennifer Lopez ("Out of Sight"); Julia Roberts ("Ocean's Eleven" and "Ocean's Twelve"); Catherine Zeta-Jones ("Intolerable Cruelty"); Vera Farmiga ("Up in the Air"). Gosling: Rachel McAdams ("The Notebook"); Michelle Williams ("Blue Valentine") Emma Stone ("Crazy, Stupid, Love"), Carey Mulligan ("Drive"); an anatomically correct sex doll ("Lars and the Real Girl").

OFF-SCREEN ROMANCES: Clooney is divorced from actress Talia Balsam and has dated model Lisa Snowdon, former reality show contestant and cocktail waitress Sarah Larson and actress Elisabetta Canalis. He is now dating former WWE star Stacy Keibler. Gosling previously dated his "Notebook" co-star McAdams and has been linked most recently to Eva Mendes.

THE WINNER: A tie. While Clooney will probably win on Golden Globe night, Gosling is so hot these days he seems unstoppable.

RIM: Next-generation phones not out till late 2012 (AP)

TORONTO ? BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. said Thursday that new phones deemed critical to the company's future will be delayed until late 2012.

Mike Lazaridis, one of the company's co-CEOs, said the BlackBerry 10 phones will need a highly integrated chipset that will not be available until mid-2012, so the company can now expect them to ship late in the year. He disclosed the delay on a conference call with analysts.

Analysts say RIM's future depends on the new software platform. RIM needs to come up with a compelling BlackBerry as U.S. users have moved on to flashier touch-screen phones such as Apple's iPhone and various competing models that run Google's Android software.

Earlier Thursday, RIM said BlackBerry sales will fall sharply in the holiday quarter, providing further evidence that it is struggling to compete. It also has been having a hard time finding a niche in the tablet-computer market, which is dominated by Apple's iPad.

RIM continues to enjoy success overseas, but market researcher NPD Group says RIM's market share of smartphones in the U.S. has declined from 44 percent in 2009 to 10 percent this year.

The company's stock fell 7 percent in extended trading Thursday.

The delay in BlackBerry 10 phones is the latest in a series of setbacks for the once-iconic Canadian company. Its PlayBook tablet computer hasn't been selling well, forcing the company to sell them at a deep discount. A widespread outage frustrated tens of millions of BlackBerry users in October. RIM fired two executives after their drunken rowdiness forced the diversion of an Air Canada flight. The head of its operations in Indonesia faces charges related to a stampede at a recent promotional sale where dozens of consumers were injured.

RIM said its net income sank 71 percent as revenue fell and the company took a large accounting charge on the PlayBook, which uses the same operating software that RIM's new phones will use.

"We ask for your patience and confidence," Lazaridis said.

RIM earned $265 million, or 51 cents per share, for its fiscal third quarter that ended Nov. 26. That compares with $911 million, or $1.74 per share, a year ago. The company said revenue fell 6 percent to $5.2 billion. The PlayBook charge was $485 million before taxes.

The company shipped 14.1 million BlackBerry smartphones during the third quarter and 150,000 PlayBook tablets, but its fourth-quarter guidance was what investors focused on because it had warned about the third-quarter results earlier.

Although RIM has said it would sell fewer BlackBerrys in the current quarter, the forecast given Thursday appeared worse than expected.

RIM said it would only ship between 11 million and 12 million BlackBerrys in the fourth quarter compared to 14.8 million in the previous fourth quarter.

RIM also said its fourth-quarter earnings would be in the range of 80 to 95 cents per share on revenue in the range of $4.6 billion to $4.9 billion. Analysts had been expecting earnings of $1.15 a share on revenue of $5.04 billion, according to FactSet.

Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies & Co. in New York, said earlier that if RIM reveals that it will ship no more than 12 million BlackBerrys in the current quarter, then the company needs to get its new phones out fast. Otherwise, RIM could lose money in future quarters as it continues to struggle to sell the current, stopgap models.

Misek said late Thursday the BlackBerry 10 phones will now be released three to nine months later than people believed.

BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis said the guidance was terrible and wondered if it was the start of a collapse.

"If consumers abandon this platform it can happen pretty quickly," Gillis said. "Don't think this is the bottom."

Jim Balsillie, the other co-CEO, said the last few quarters have been among the most challenging times in the company's most recent history. He said executives are working to turn it around, but said it may take time.

"We are not satisfied with the performance of the business in the United States," Balsillie said.

Balsillie said he and Lazaridis have reduced their cash salary to $1 per year, though they will continue to earn stock options and other compensation.

RIM's stock fell $1.15 to a new seven-year low of $13.98 in extended trading Thursday after the results were released.

The stock has lost about 75 percent of its value this year. A company that was worth more than $70 billion a few years ago now has a market value of around $8 billion.

"We recognize our shareholders may feel we've fallen short," Balsillie said

Oil near $96 amid Europe debt, economy concerns (AP)

SINGAPORE ? Oil prices rose to near $96 a barrel Thursday in Asia after plunging the previous session on investor pessimism that Europe's debt crisis will trigger a recession on the continent next year.

Benchmark crude for January delivery was up 59 cents to $95.54 a barrel in midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $5.19, or 5.2 percent, to settle at $94.95 on Wednesday.

In London, Brent crude was up 15 cents at $105.17 on the ICE futures exchange.

Crude dropped Wednesday amid growing concerns about slowing global oil demand. The International Energy Agency and the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries have recently forecast fuel consumption will grow slightly next year, but some analysts say even those modest expectations may be too optimistic.

Before Wednesday, crude had traded near $100 for the last month after jumping from $75 in October amid signs the U.S. economy is slowly improving.

"The latest demand forecasts from both OPEC and the IEA still look too high and oil prices have further to fall," Capital Economics said in a report. The consultancy expects Brent crude to fall to near $85 by the end of next year.

Investor fears that European leaders may not be able to contain the region's debt woes helped pull the euro down to its lowest level against the U.S. dollar in 11 months Wednesday. A stronger dollar makes crude more expensive for investors with other currencies.

In other energy trading on the Nymex, natural gas rose 0.4 cents at $3.14 per 1,000 cubic feet. Heating oil gained 2.5 cents to $2.86 a gallon and gasoline futures added 2.6 cents to $2.53 a gallon.

World's largest river dolphin looks pretty in pink

Rowan Hooper, news editor

01318072.jpg(Image: Kevin Schafer/naturepl.com)

Meet the Amazon river dolphin (Inia geoffrensis), also known as the boto, or, if you believe Amazonian folklore, dad. Legend has it that the dolphin can transform itself into a handsome young man, who is a willing dance and conversation partner for village women. The enchanted dolphin is blamed - somewhat conveniently, it has to be said - for children whose paternity is disputed.

Now we know a little more about the animal - but not much. It lives in the Amazon and Orinoco rivers, but we don't have a good estimate of population size because its habitat range is vast and the rivers are mostly inaccessible. Despite this, it is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as an endangered species. Many boto are killed by fishermen, pollution, boat traffic accidents and habitat loss, which are factors that drove the Chinese river dolphin, the Baiji, to almost-certain extinction.

The boto - the largest of the four remaining species of river dolphin - is well adapted to its murky environment. Unfused vertebrae in its neck mean it is capable of turning its head through a range of 180 degrees, allowing it to squeeze around submerged trees and roots. Its long snout means it can winkle out hiding fish, crabs and turtles.

As for why it is so delicately coloured, we don't know for sure. A network of capillaries at the surface of the skin may explain it.

PFT: Texans' Phillips taking medical leave

Chicago Bears v Denver BroncosGetty Images

It?s one thing for guys like Dolphins linebacker Karlos Dansby or a pastor to opine that God is working through Tim Tebow.? It?s quite another for Tebow to say it.

And it?s quite another for Tebow to say that God is actually speaking to him.

And while Tebow has yet to say it publicly, he?s saying it to his teammates.

?Tebow came to me and said, ?Don?t worry about a thing,? because God has spoken to him,? linebacker Wesley Woodyard said after Sunday?s win over the Bears, according to Mark Kiszla of the Denver Post.? Woodyard then forced the Marion Barber fumble in overtime, when the Bears were in field goal position.

Even though the story itself is a couple days old (which makes it nearly as old as the New Testament in Internet time), the concept is timeless.? Regardless of whether Tebow actually has a burning bush in his backyard, Tebow?s faith has fueled a level of confidence that could be unprecedented in professional sports.? He truly believes his team is going to win, so his teammates believe it.

And, perhaps most importantly, his opponents believe it, too.

For the teams who play the Broncos, it?s like continuing to try to beat an older brother in ping pong.? No matter what happens, that feeling of doubt inevitably emerges, and it all falls apart.

Many believe that this entire dynamic ? Tebow?s confidence, his teammates? confidence, and the ensuing lack of confidence on the part of the opponents ? faces its biggest test yet on Sunday, when the Patriots come to town.? Win or lose, however, the Tebow/Broncos confidence won?t be going away any time soon.

?It?s not necessarily prophesying,? Tebow has said.? ?But sometimes you can feel God has a big plan.?

If/when the Broncos lose or fail to make the playoffs or lose in the playoffs, Tebow will regard the outcome as part of God?s plan.? And then Tebow will prepare himself for the 2012 season, with the same week-in, week-out confidence that has made his team far better than the sum of the individual pieces.

It?s become fashionable to point out that Tebow has received too much credit for the accomplishments of his teammates.? But those same teammates who are 7-1 under Tebow?s leadership were 1-4 under Kyle Orton.

So regardless of how Tebow is getting his confidence, it?s that confidence that has made him one of the best players in the NFL.? And the Broncos would be crazy not to embrace this guy for the next decade or longer.? Plenty of guys can throw a football, but very few can inspire grown men wearing the same uniform to believe that together they can achieve great things.? Even fewer can cause the grown men wearing a different uniform to sense that, no matter what they do, it?s simply not their day.
