Vizio's CES 2012 HDTV lineup includes 3D, Google TV and ultrawidescreen... again

After lighting things up with new PCs and a 10-inch tablet, Vizio is returning to its roots by unveiling a series of new HDTVs during CES, along with a few old ones. Among its more conventional sets, the E3D series has been bringing value priced passive 3D since last year, but it will be joined by the M3D series in a 47- and 55-inch model, the latter of which includes a Bluetooth QWERTY remote. If that's not enough, users can step up to the R3D series which come in the same sizes and have better backlighting.

The more interesting news however, is that the 65-inch versions of both M- and R- lines feature VIA Plus, which is Vizio's customized spin on Google TV. We first got a peek at it last year, however the delayed introduction of Honeycomb and adoption of ARM processors likely doomed any chance of a release. In another blast from the past, Vizio has also queued up three 21:9 "CinemaWide" ultrawidescreen WFHD (2560x1080) models (above), in sizes of 50-, 58- and 71-inches with 3D and Yahoo! Widgets. We were heartbroken when we never saw these come home in 2011, although in all fairness no one else brought an ultrawidescreen flat-panel to us either so there's still an extremely rectangular space on our wall that needs filling. Prices and ship dates for all the new TVs are still TBD, and those without Google TV include Yahoo TV widgets. Check the press release after the break for the available details, before we check out the new models and try to find out if they'll actually arrive this time around.

Work underway to upgrade Decatur High baseball field

Work has begun to modernize baseball facilities at Decatur High School.

According to the Decatur Daily, the Decatur City Council awarded a bid to Bessemer-based R&G Waldrop Electric in November for the $243,450 project that involves the installation of new lights and poles at the field.

Tom Chappell, assistant director of Decatur?s Parks and Recreation Department, said the lights should be functioning by the end of the month when baseball practice begins.

Baseball: Twins in need of a righthanded relief pitcher

MINNEAPOLIS _ Three months from Friday, the Twins will open a new season at Baltimore's Camden Yards, and on the 20th anniversary of that ballpark's opening, the warehouse windows in right field should be safe.

Lefthanded hitters take aim at that warehouse with each swing, but the patchwork relief corps the Twins are assembling has decent numbers against lefties.

It's the righties that should worry them.

Here are nine of the Twins' internal bullpen candidates and the batting averages righthanded hitters posted against them last year: Matt Capps (.260), Glen Perkins (.259), Brian Duensing (.330), Alex Burnett (.264), Lester Oliveros (.292), Anthony Swarzak (.301), Esmerling Vasquez (.254), Jeff Gray (.280) and Kyle Waldrop (.360).

Six weeks before pitchers and catchers report to Fort Myers, Fla., it seems inevitable the Twins will add at least one established righthanded reliever. Don't expect a big splash, but rather a move that mirrors what General Manager Terry Ryan has done all offseason, addressing needs with solid, if unspectacular, replacements.

Jamey Carroll is a slap hitter whose range is fading, but at age 38, he should help stem the middle-infield chaos from last year. Ryan Doumit is suspect defensively, even at catcher, but when healthy, he can hit.

A lineup, which looks increasingly punchless after the departures of Michael Cuddyer and Jason Kubel, will welcome Josh Willingham, coming off a 29-homer season for Oakland. And Jason Marquis should bring decent value to the rotation as an innings eater, at $3 million.

To do all this while streamlining the payroll has been admirable and typical Ryan. But to leave the current bullpen mess unattended would be inexcusable, especially for him. Twins relievers posted the worst ERA in the majors last season, at 4.51, and their all-time saves leader, Joe Nathan, has bolted for Texas.

Capps is back (pause here for applause to fade), and if the other starting pitchers are healthy, the Marquis signing should enable the Twins to move Duensing back to the bullpen.

But the Twins usually carry seven relievers. They shouldn't head to Florida with at least four bullpen spots up for grabs. Teams can usually count on one or two spring training surprises, but not four from the same specialty group.

The Twins have signed some interesting minor league free agents. Jason Bulger was a dominant reliever for the Angels in 2009 and held righties to a .182 average last year at Class AAA Salt Lake City. Jared Burton was a key member of the Reds bullpen from 2007 to ?09. Rule 5 draft pick Terry Doyle could emerge as a long reliever with upside. And maybe University of Miami closer Carlos Gutierrez will finally show why the Twins made him the 27th overall pick in the 2008 draft.

But it's one thing to dominate Grapefruit League games and another to dominate in the regular season as a top righthanded setup man must. Signing one veteran would reduce the pressure these other pitchers face on April 6 in Baltimore.

Fernando Rodney, who held righties to a .180 batting average last year, just signed a one-year, $2 million deal with Tampa Bay. Among the remaining free agent options are Chad Qualls (.218), Scott Linebrink (.268), Todd Coffey (.193), Juan Cruz (.238), Shawn Camp (.263) and Michael Wuertz (.310).

Ryan has said he would like to keep the Opening Day payroll close to $100 million, down from $113 million last year. The current projection is about $98 million, and it's worth noting that the Twins don't count the $2 million buyout they gave Nathan in this number. Apparently, that goes on last year's books.

It's also worth remembering that Opening Day is just a starting point. If Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, Denard Span, Scott Baker and Francisco Liriano are healthy and flourishing, and this team gets off to a strong start, the Pohlads surely would green-light Ryan to add payroll with midseason moves.

Even now, there's wiggle room.

"There's enough (payroll) flexibility where I certainly can discuss it with ownership and with (team President Dave St. Peter)," Ryan said. "You never close any door. There may be a person out there that ultimately doesn't have a place to land that might think this is a good chance for him. So don't think that we're done."

A righthanded reliever could be the final piece. The puzzle won't look perfect then, but coming off a 63-99 finish, Ryan's budget-conscious moves should put the Twins back in the right direction.

Frustrated fans demand Motorola make good on promise, deliver unlocked bootloaders

Like HTC and Sony Ericsson, Motorola had previously committed itself to deliver products with unlockable bootloaders. In fact, the company went so far as to profess that it would make this functionality available across its entire product line by late 2011 -- subject to carrier approval, anyway. While the first two companies have made good on their claims, Motorola seems content to be silent on the matter. Certainly the international version of the RAZR can't equal the sum total of the company's promise, right? Now that 2011 has come and gone, some of Motorola's most fervent supporters are growing anxious. In an effort to grab the company's attention -- and see that something gets done -- one individual has started Operation: Make Ourselves Heard, which has gathered approximately 1,600 signatures from like-minded individuals, each who seek tangible progress from Motorola. If this issue is important to you, we certainly encourage you to sign the petition.

Q&A: Two Super Bowl Champion Coaches Talk NFL Playoffs

NewsFeed hopes for a Victor Cruz touchdown, just so we can see his talented salsa-dance celebrations.

Mike Segar / Reuters

Mike Segar / Reuters

New York Giants' receiver Victor Cruz spins the ball after a touchdown. Look for his spot-on salsa dancing after a score.

Tebowing fanatics, take heart. Though Tim Tebow doesn?t take the field until Sunday afternoon, there?s still plenty of football to go around beforehand. The NFL starts its four-game weekend playoff schedule with two games on Saturday and then two more on Sunday, offering plenty more than camera angles of a celebrity quarterback on the sideline.

The winners of this weekend?s games will advance to next week?s games. Then, on Jan. 22, the AFC and NFC championship games will determine who plays in Indianapolis on Feb. 5 in the Super Bowl.?NewsFeed caught up with former Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl champion coach and current CBS NFL analyst Bill Cowher and former Indianapolis Colts Super Bowl champion coach and current NBC Football Night in America analyst Tony Dungy to pinpoint what the average fan should look for in this year?s playoffs.

(MORE: Sensory Training Technology Takes Hold in the NFL)

What do we need to know about Cincinnati (9-7) at Houston (10-6)?

Cowher: I think the number one thing is that for the first time in a long time, we have two rookie quarterbacks facing each other. In the playoffs that is a big deal. The year Andy Dalton has had in Cincinnati and the combo of (wide receiver) A.J. Green is good. In Houston you are looking at a team so good at running the football.

What about Detroit (10-6) at New Orleans (13-3)?

Cowher: It has all the makings to be an offensive shootout. Possessions will be very important and whichever defense can take the ball away will be crucial. New Orleans has one of the hottest offenses (led by quarterback Drew Brees) in the NFL right now and they are looking to atone for last year?s early playoff exit.

Dungy: Everyone is jumping on the New Orleans bandwagon and (quarterback) Drew Brees has really lit up the competition, scoring points rapidly. Detroit is just excited to be in the playoffs and (quarterback) Matt Stafford will be under a lot of pressure to match Brees point for point.

What are key takeaways for Atlanta (10-6) at New York Giants (9-7)?

Cowher: New York is getting healthy on the defensive line and when they are all healthy, they can get pressure (on the quarterback). But can they stop a team playing as good as anyone? Look for a big week from Michael Turner (Atlanta running back). He is the key to Atlanta and New York has trouble stopping the run.

Dungy: The Giants have been hot and Atlanta has been a little under the radar. New York has a great pass rush.

What can we expect for Pittsburgh (12-4) at Denver (8-8)?

Cowher: When was the last time a road team in the playoffs was favored? Pittsburgh has the experience and everything on paper says this should be a game that Pittsburgh should win and win big. Denver does some unorthodox and unconventional things with Tim Tebow, so take nothing for granted.

Dungy: It is obviously going to be Tebow versus the great Pittsburgh defense. And you will want to keep an eye on (Steelers quarterback) Ben Roethlisberger. How healthy is he? Will he be able to move around and give Pittsburgh mobile quarterbacking?

Mitt Romney Could Lose Lead In Republican Presidential Contest After Dual Debates

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Republican rivals for the presidential nomination have a chance to knock front-runner Mitt Romney, who has a commanding lead in New Hampshire polls, off his perch in back-to-back weekend debates that could help define the contest.

In a race largely driven by 13 previous sparring matches, Romney has emerged mostly unscathed by the six or seven opponents who have flanked his debate position on center stage.

That could change with Saturday night's debate or the one scheduled Sunday morning, as rivals Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum seek to stop Romney's march to the GOP nomination. In particular, Gingrich is looking to keep his candidacy afloat while Santorum hopes to capitalize on his neck-and-neck performance against Romney in Iowa's caucuses.

There are fewer than 12 hours between an ABC News/WMUR debate Saturday and an NBC News/Facebook debate on Sunday's "Meet the Press."

"Two debates! One tomorrow night, one the next morning. Why even stop?" Romney declared Friday at a campaign stop in Tilton. "Why don't we just go right through? It's nonstop!"

Debates can have unforeseen impact. Just days before the New Hampshire primary in 2008, Democratic candidate Barack Obama used that venue to call rival Hillary Rodham Clinton "likable enough" ? a dismissive comment that didn't sit well with her supporters. Obama, who had a significant lead in polls, lost the New Hampshire primary.

Romney's rivals have a serious gap to close in New Hampshire ? and, recent polls show, in upcoming South Carolina. Two surveys out Friday show Romney up at least 20 percentage points over Texas Rep. Ron Paul, his next-closest opponent.

Paul visited the Windmill Restaurant in Concord Saturday morning where he shook hands and chatted with voters. He had planned to have breakfast there but was whisked out by staff who said they didn't want patrons' meals disrupted by the crush of reporters and camera crews.

Paul had no other events until Saturday's debate. Instead his son, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, will campaign on his behalf in Concord and Windham.

So far, Romney's rivals have been looking past the first-in-the-nation primary state. Santorum has campaigned here but has been peppered with hostile questions about his opposition to gay marriage and comments about homosexuality.

Gingrich has been talking of merely holding Romney's winning total under 50 percent in New Hampshire while Paul, who arrived in the state on Friday, has focused his criticism on Santorum.

"He brags about being for a balanced budget amendment but never did anything about it," Paul said of Santorum's time in the Senate. "He voted four or five times to raise the debt ceiling. He voted to double the size of the Department of Education."

Gingrich, who has made his mark during debates, has aggressively criticized Romney in recent days. He called Romney a "liar" and also said President Barack Obama would laugh at Romney if he were the nominee.

Santorum has also gone after Romney, seeking to undercut the former venture capitalist's record as a turnaround expert.

"Americans don't want someone to manage Washington," he said Saturday while campaigning in Goffstown, N.H. "They want someone who can fundamentally change Washington."

The former senator from Pennsylvania finished a surprisingly strong second in the Iowa caucuses, coming within eight votes of victory. But he has little time to try to convert that near-victory into a campaign organization in New Hampshire.

Recognizing he is unlikely to topple Romney here, Santorum instead cast himself as a strong challenger to Obama for November.

"Who are you, who are you to say that every child in America should go to college?" Santorum said of Obama during a forum at St. Anselm College near Manchester. "If one of my kids wants to go and be an auto mechanic, good for him. ... It's the kind of snobbery from those who think they know how to run our lives."

As of last month, New Hampshire had about 232,000 registered Republicans, 223,000 Democrats and 313,000 undeclared voters, who can vote in either primary. The state also allows same-day voter registration at the polls.

New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner says he expects 250,000 ballots to be cast in Tuesday's highly contested Republican presidential primary. In 2008, when both sides had contested races, just over 241,000 ballots were cast in the GOP primary and 289,000 in the Democratic primary.

Looking ahead, a Time/CNN poll in South Carolina showed Romney leading Santorum with 37 percent of the vote.

Santorum is set to leave Sunday for South Carolina for a half-day of campaigning. Romney has events planned in New Hampshire through primary day on Tuesday.
