Insulation does more than retain heat in your home. Maintaining an effective, insulating barrier provides your home with comfort and protection. ?In fact, forgoing this vital home maintenance chore can produce a number of negative impacts for your home:

  • Reduced Comfort
Sufficient insulation ensures temperatures remain regulated across the entire home. Weaknesses in one part of home can make it far more difficult for a house to reach?a uniform climate. As a result, homeowners find that some rooms are?colder than others. Many will attempt to raise the temperature to compensate, only to cause other rooms to become too warm. Proper installation makes certain homeowners can find a comfortable equilibrium across the home.
    ?
  • Moisture Vulnerabilities?
Insufficient insulation, especially in the attic, can cause moisture to build within the home. This increase of moisture presents a number of threats to the entire home. Condensation?exposure is often detrimental for sensitive items stored in an attic. Furthermore, the damp and wet setting of a moist attic is the perfect breeding ground for mold. Homeowners attempting to sell their home will find that mold can quickly compromise a home sale. Families are also exposed to a health risk when mold begins to populate in their living spaces. Hire trustworthy professionals to avoid this costly scenario!
    ?
  • Wasted Energy
Gaps in insulation translate to greater heat loss across your home. In turn, heating appliances work overtime to correct this rapid heat loss. Unfortunately, your monthly energy bill and your heating systems will pay the price for this inefficient climate control. This avoidable loss of funds is just one of the many reasons to invest in professional installation.

Storm, tornadoes damage Missouri, Illinois, Kansas; kill 9

An apparent twister rolled through Branson, Mo. just before 1 a.m. and seemed to hopscotch up the city's main roadway, ripping roofs off hotels and damaging some of the city's famed music theaters dangerously close to the start of the heavy tourism season. At least 37 people were reported hurt, mostly with cuts and bruises.

A powerful storm system that produced multiple reports of?tornadoes?lashed the Midwest early Wednesday, roughing up the entertainment resort town of Branson and laying waste to small towns in Illinois and Kansas. At least nine people were killed.

An apparent twister rolled through Branson just before 1 a.m. and seemed to hopscotch up the city's main roadway, ripping roofs off hotels and damaging some of the city's famed music theaters dangerously close to the start of the heavy tourism season. At least 37 people were reported hurt, mostly with cuts and bruises.

"We were blessed with several things ? the time of year and certainly the time of day, when people were not in their vehicles or outdoors," said Mayor Raeanne Presley, noting that during Branson's peak season, up to 60,000 visitors would have been in the city on any given day and staying in many of the hotels that were damaged.

"If it was a week later, it'd be a different story," said Bill Tirone, assistant general manager for the 530-room downtown Hilton hotel, where windows were shattered and some rooms had furniture sucked away by high winds. Hotel workers were able to get all guests to safety.

To the north in Stone and Dallas counties, at least 60 homes were damaged or destroyed and at least 17 more people injured, one critically.

John Moore, owner of the damaged Cakes-n-Creams '50s Diner, said the?tornado?seemed to target the city's main strip, moving down the entertainment district, through the convention center, across a lake and into a housing division. He said the?tornado?appeared to "jump side to side."

"The theater next to me kind of exploded. It went everywhere. The hotels on the two sides of me lost their roofs. Power lines are down. Windows are blown out," Moore said. "There's major, major destruction. There has to be millions dollars of damage all down the strip."

At least six people were killed in the southern Illinois town of Harrisburg after a pre-dawn storm leveled much of the community of 9,000 people.

In Missouri, one person was killed in a trailer park in the town of Buffalo. Two more fatalities were reported in the Cassville and Puxico areas.

The storms left much of the small eastern Kansas town of Harveyville in rubble. Earlier reports from authorities indicated that three people had been critically injured, but that was lowered to one by midday.

The?tornadoes?were spawned by a powerful storm system that blew down from the Rockies on Tuesday and was headed across the Ohio and Tennessee river valleys toward the Mid-Atlantic region.

Corey Mead, lead forecaster at the U.S. Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said a broad cold front was slamming into warm, humid air over much of the eastern half of the nation.

From Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, at least 16?tornado?sightings were reported from Nebraska and Kansas across southern Missouri to Illinois and Kentucky, according to the storm center, an arm of the National Weather Service.

Jennifer Verhaalen, a long-term resident at the Hillbilly Inn Motel in downtown Branson, said she saw a white funnel cloud followed by a wall of rain as the storm closed in on the town around 1 a.m.

She said she retreated to a back bedroom with her husband as the storm slammed into two other hotel buildings tearing the roof off one.

Across the road, a strip mall lay in tatters, its roof missing and several walls collapsed. As the sun rose Wednesday, business owners picked through the remains of their stores. About 170 boats and several docks were destroyed on Table Rock Lake.

Keith and Glenna Bartley, tourists from Kingsport, Tenn., said staff at the Grand Victorian Hotel where they were staying ushered them to the basement around 1:30 a.m.

Branson has long been a tourist destination for visitors attracted to the beauty of the surrounding Ozarks. But the city rose to prominence in the 1990s because of its theaters, which drew country music stars including Merle Haggard and Crystal Gale as well as other musical celebrities such as Chubby Checker and Andy Williams.

It is about 110 miles southeast of Joplin, which was devastated by a monstrous twister last May that killed 161 people. Memories of the disaster fueled residents and guests to quickly take cover after the sirens sounded early Wednesday.

"I think so many people from Branson went over to help in Joplin and having seen that, it was fresh on our minds," said Presley, the mayor whose family owns the Presleys' Theater on the main strip. "We all reached for our loved ones a little sooner and got to the basement a little faster."

Town leaders insisted Wednesday that Branson remains open for business, suggesting that any repairs and rebuilding would happen in a matter of days.

Farther north, rescue crews waited for sunrise to begin searching a trailer park south of Buffalo where at least one person was killed after an apparent twister slammed the area.

Lt. Dana Eagan of the Dallas County Sheriff's Office said 13 people at the park were hurt and the entire town was without power. Buffalo is about 35 miles north of Springfield.

Tornado?season normally starts in March, but it isn't unusual to see severe storms earlier in the year. Forecasters can seldom assess how serious a season will be because twisters are so unpredictable. This year, two people were killed by separate?tornadoes?in Alabama in January, and preliminary reports have showed 95?tornadoes?struck that month.

In neighboring Kansas, the National Weather Service reported brief?tornado?touchdowns southwest of Hutchinson, and Gov. Sam Brownback declared a state of emergency.

The system also skirted northern Arkansas, bringing gusts of up to 60 mph in the northwest. A wall cloud, which often produces twisters, was reported in Cherokee Village, where trees were scattered along roads, the weather service said. Residents of Clay County in northeastern Arkansas reported hail the size of golf balls, while half dollar-sized hail was reported in Mountain Home.

In northern Oklahoma, gusts of up to 80 mph flipped trailers and damaged homes near Cherokee.

Inground Vs. Above Ground Swimming Pools- Whats The Difference ...

Copyright ? 2012 savvycontent.com

Nowadays, there are a lot of types, designs, and styles of swimming pools that a person can choose from. These swimming pools range from plastic, Jacuzzi, inground, or above ground. The most common, probably, are the inground and the above ground swimming pools.

Swimming pools were said to have started in Ancient Pakistan. Back then, people called these pools baths. Those pools were covered with bricks and sealed with tar sealant, to avoid any leakage. The great bath, the first of the baths was twelve meters by seven meters in area. Swimming pools gained popularity when the Greeks and Romans used it for water sport training and recreation. Pools also doubled as fish ponds. When a Roman emperor suggested a heated swimming pool, more and more aristocrats wanted to build a heated swimming pool in their estate. It was not until the 19th century, when the British established various swimming clubs, that the swimming pool became largely popular among the masses. Since then, many have adapted swimming pools in their homes and villages.

There have always been talks about the difference between the inground and the above ground swimming pools. When a person is debating about what kind of pool he should install in his property, there are a lot of things he should consider.

First, the owner should think about the amount of space he has available for the pool. The inground pool takes more space than the above ground pool. While inground pools are permanent, once the owner gets tired of having an above ground swimming pool he can just uninstall it any time. Above ground pools are more cost-effective and budget friendly compared to the inground pool. Not only that, but some states also have laws and taxes regarding inground pools. Since the taxes are big, most families prefer the above ground pool because there are no necessary taxes that go with it.

The people who will use the pool and activities that will be done there are very important things to consider when a person is deciding the pool that he should install. Although the above ground pool is very convenient, they may not be good for swim training and other water sports. On the other hand, the inground pool need heaters because they can get cold at night, while the above ground pool does not need their water to be heated, and the need for a heater will depend on the location of the pool and how it is installed.

(AP) ? Davy Jones, the heartthrob singer who helped propel the made-for-TV rock band The Monkees to the top of the pop charts as an American version of the Beatles, died Wednesday. He was 66.

His publicist, Helen Kensick, confirmed Jones died of a heart attack in Indiantown, where he had lived. Jones complained of breathing troubles early in the morning and was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, said Rhonda Irons of the Martin County Sheriff's Office. The sheriff's spokeswoman said there were no suspicious circumstances.

Born in Manchester, England, Jones had stylishly long hair, boyish good looks and a British accent that endeared him to legions of screaming young fans after "The Monkees" premiered on CBS in 1966.

Aspirations of Beatles-like fame were never fully achieved, however, as the TV show lasted just two years. But The Monkees made rock 'n roll history as the band galvanized a wide American following with love-struck hits such as "Daydream Believer" and "I'm a Believer" that endure even today.

Jones was born on Dec. 30, 1945, and became a child star in his native England who appeared on television and stage, including a heralded role as "The Artful Dodger" in the play "Oliver."

He earned a Tony nomination at 16 when he reprised that role in the show's Broadway production, a success that brought him to the attention of Columbia Pictures/Screen Gems Television, which created The Monkees.

The show, clearly patterned on the Beatle's film "A Hard Days Night," chronicled the comic trials and tribulations of a rock group whose four members lived together and traveled to gigs in a tricked-out car called the Monkeemobile. Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork and Micky Dolenz starred with him. Each part was loosely patterned after one of the Beatles, with Jones in the Paul McCartney role for The Monkees.

The first single, "Last Train to Clarksville," became a No. 1 hit. And the show caught on with audiences, featuring fast-paced, helter-skelter comedy inspired as much by the Marx Brothers as the Beatles.

It was a shrewd case of cross-platform promotion. As David Bianculli noted in his "Dictionary of Teleliteracy," ''The show's self-contained music videos, clear forerunners of MTV, propelled the group's first seven singles to enviable positions of the pop charts: three number ones, two number twos, two number threes."

At 5-feet-3, Jones was by far the shortest member of the group ? a fact often made light of on the show. But with his youthful good looks, he was also the group's heartthrob. And with the pronounced accent that he never lost, Jones was in some ways the Monkees' direct connection to Beatlemania, which was still sweeping the United States when the television show "The Monkees" debuted.

Yet after the show's launch, The Monkees came under fire from music critics when it was learned that session musicians ? and not the group's members ? had played the musical instruments on their recordings. They were derided as the "Prefab Four," an insulting comparison to the Beatles' nickname, the "Fab Four."

In reality, Jones could play the drums and guitar, and although Dolenz learned to play the drums after he joined the group, he could also play guitar, as could Nesmith.

Nesmith also wrote several of The Monkees' songs, as well as songs for others. Tork, who played bass and keyboards on the TV show was a multi-instrumentalist.

The group eventually prevailed over the show's producers, including music director Don Kirchner, and began to play their own instrumentals. Regardless, the group was supported by enviable talent.

Carole King and Gerry Goffin wrote "Pleasant Valley Sunday," and Neil Diamond penned "I'm a Believer." Musicians who played on their records included Billy Preston, who later played with the Beatles, Glen Campbell, Leon Russell, Ry Cooder and Neil Young.

The group also released the 1968 film "Head," derided at the time as a psychedelic mishmash notable only for an appearance by Jack Nicholson. It has since come to be considered a cult classic by Monkees fans.

After two seasons, the TV series had flared out and was cancelled after 58 episodes in the summer of 1968. But The Monkees remained a nostalgia act for decades.

After the TV show ended, Jones continued to tour with the other Monkees for a time, sometimes playing the drums at concerts when Dolenz came up front to sing.

Many also remember Jones from a widely seen episode of "The Brady Bunch" that aired in 1971, in which he makes an appearance at Marcia Brady's school dance. In the episode, Marcia Brady, president of her school's Davy Jones Fan Club, promised she could get him to appear before her classmates.

The group eventually broke up over creative differences, although it did reunite from time to time for brief tours over the years, usually without Nesmith.

In 1987, Jones, Tork, and Dolenz recorded a new album, "Pool It." And two years later, the group received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

All four, however, came together for a 1996 album, "Justus," and a subsequent TV movie "Hey, Hey, It's The Monkees!" that saw them still living in the same house and still traveling in the Monkeemobile ? just like old times.

Jones, who is survived by his wife Jessica, continued to make appearances on television and stage later. But it was the fame of The Monkees that pulled him back to that era time and time again. On his website, he recalled during auditions for the show when all four men finally were put together in a scene.

"That's it," he recalled everyone around him saying: "Magic."

Lake Chad: Inhabitants adapt to lower water levels

ScienceDaily (Feb. 28, 2012) ? Lake Chad used to be one of the biggest lakes in the world, but its volume has been reduced to a tenth of what it was in the 1960s. The way this lake has dried up has become a symbol of climate change in action. It's true that the lake's water level has always changed, but this hasn't diminished the major changes to the lifestyle of the inhabitants of the lake's shoreline. Yet, as demonstrated by a French-Nigerian team including the IRD1, lake dwellers have made the best of these changes to their environment. Formerly fishermen or herdsmen, they have become farmers, often growing for export. The land that was part of the lake has made it possible for them to develop highly productive crops such as corn, rice and cowpea. In the valley of the Komadugu Yobe River in Niger, they have even commenced the intensive farming of peppers, which is highly lucrative although risky.

Rewatering the lake, as proposed by the Ubangi5 international project, would cause upheaval once again to the farming system, particularly if the yearly rise and fall in lake water levels were to cease.

Lying in the midst of the Sahelian band, Lake Chad is a vital water resource for fishermen, herdsmen and farmers from the four countries along its shoreline: Niger, Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon. The lake has undergone major changes in recent decades. Half a century ago, it was virtually an inland sea with an area of 20,000 km?. Recurring droughts in the 1970s and 1980s caused it to dry up quickly and shrank its area to around 2,000 km?, which of course affected the lake people

Fishermen who...

A French-Nigerian team including the IRD1 studied the major changes to lifestyles that have occurred around Lake Chad in recent decades. The results demonstrate to what extent Sahelian societies have been able to adapt to a major environmental shift. Using an interdisciplinary approach, agronomists, anthropologists, geographers and hydrologists looked especially at changes in the production methods around Bosso in Niger, a small town which previously was located at the fork of the Komadugu River and the lake. When Lake Chad was at high water mark, up until the

1970s, the inhabitants mainly fished -- and this provided both food and significant income from the export of smoked or dried fish.

...have become intensive farmers

The water levels of the lake have always fluctuated2, as previous paleo-climatic studies have shown. As a result, the shoreline people have developed a significant capacity to adapt, alternating between fishing, which was highly profitable, and raising various crops through the use of sophisticated irrigation techniques. Since the fall in water levels from 1970 to 2000, the newly revealed shoreline of Lake Chad has become the breadbasket of the region. The now dry northern basin of Lake Chad, in particular, has been transformed into many grain-growing polders3 in the shallows amidst the dunes. For, as the lake water recedes, the inhabitants make use of the fertile moist soil to plant corn, cowpea4, rice, sorghum and the like, which grow without the need for irrigation or fertiliser; and they have cut back on growing millet on the lakeshore, which requires rain water and has become especially uncertain.

Peppers for export

Another money-making crop has been added to these: peppers. Mainly for export to Nigeria, the intensive farming of peppers along the Komadugu Yobe River was first begun as a local initiative in the 1960s and then developed with the encouragement of government authorities, NGOs and development programmes. This single-crop farming is lucrative but also risky as the initial cost of investing in the inputs -- fertiliser, pesticides, irrigation pump fuel -- is high. In terms of the functioning of society, it also causes inequality between men and women and between poorer farmers who have to borrow in the beginning of the season and sell their crop quickly at low prices and the wealthier farmers who can store their crops and take advantage of changes in market prices.

A climate-controlled lake

Changes in the level and the area of Lake Chad have become a well-known phenomenon since the 1960s, mainly because of work done by IRD hydrologists. The depth of the lake is slight, around two metres on average, so it acts as an evaporation machine and the water loss is very significant. About 80 % of the lake's water volume comes from the Chari River and its tributary the Logone, both of which spring from the central African mountains in the south-east and which supply water to the south basin of the lake. The water crosses the great barrier of vegetation and sand which divides the lake in two only in years of significant rainfall, when it floods the north basin -- the only side of the lake to which Niger has access. The Komadugu Yobe River itself provides only 4 % of the lake water, with the rest mainly coming from rainfall.

The rural communities have long since adapted to the fluctuations in the level of Lake Chad -- which can change by the year, from year to year and from decade to decade -- by switching occupations. High water times were favourable for fishing and soil renewal while low water periods meant the ability to plant on the polders. The present study concluded that, in contrast to what was generally thought, the system of switching between crop growing and foraging, which has come into play in recent decades, actually works quite well. The main concern for the future of this profitable farming lies in the project to shift water from the Ubangi5 to the Chari: by moving water into Lake Chad to keep a 'level lake', this system could prevent the lake from rising and falling significantly and thus produce a profound effect on the current farming methods and lifestyles of inhabitants.

Notes :

1. These studies were carried out with researchers from the CNRS and the Universities of Niamey, Maradi and Tahoua in Niger.

2. The lake's current status is that known as 'small Chad', along the lines of what was noted at the beginning of the 20th century, with several separate basins.

3. Polders are dried shore areas below sea level, with the water removed usually artificially. In this case, the term polder designates dried-up areas of the basin floors between the dunes of Lake Chad.

4. Cowpea is a bean-like vegetable whose seeds are a foodstuff.

5. The Ubangi is the main tributary of the Congo River. By running water off from it towards the Chari, Lake Chad would receive additional water over and above the current flow from the Chari.

Honorary Oscar for Angelina Jolie's leg?

Angelina Jolie's Oscar gown clearly displayed her leg, which soon became a favorite topic of Internet discussion.

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

The most-talked-about limb at the Academy Awards on Sunday night? Definitely Angelina Jolie's right leg.

The actress presented the screenplay awards while wearing a black gown with a thigh-high slit and striking an exaggerated pose that drew attention to her shapely leg.

The pose was so memorable that when "Descendants" scribe Jim Rash later came up on stage to pick up his trophy for best adapted screenplay, he mimicked the actress, sticking out his own, not-so-sexy leg and tossing his head back.

"Honestly, as soon as I saw her pose like that, I was like, 'I'm going to do that,'" Rash told Entertainment Weekly.

Jolie's leg was quickly taken to Twitter, as a new account, @AngiesRightLeg, started up and quickly earned more than 6,500 followers. Tweets included "I'm a leg, get a load of me!" and "Don't forget about the leg!"

The account also linked to BuzzFeed's "Legbombing" page, where the site urged people to insert an image of the leg into famous and not-so-famous unrelated photographs, including the now-famous shot of a line of protesters being pepper-sprayed at the University of California-Davis.
