Police: College shooter targeted female administrator

NBC's Kristen Dahlgren reports on the deadliest campus shooting in five years

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

One Goh, the former Oikos University student accused of killing seven people at?the college's campus in Oakland, Calif., told authorities he was upset?with being expelled?and?had sought out?a female college official who was not present, the city's police chief said Tuesday.

Goh "then went through the entire building systematically and randomly shooting victims," Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said at a news conference.

"We do know that he was upset at administrators at the school. We do know that he was upset with several students here because of the way he was treated when he was enrolled here two months ago," Jordan said.

He said Goh, 43,?had been teased although he did not elaborate. The South Korean national had been expelled, possibly for behavioral problems, according to Jordan.

Other reports indicated that Goh, who reportedly had been a?nursing student,?recently lost two family members and had debts.

In Monday's rampage --?the deadliest U.S. campus shooting in five years --?one witness said?Goh told students: "Get in line and I'm going to kill you all."

??????Jordan said Goh first took a receptionist hostage and then went looking for a particular female administrator. He then took the receptionist into a classroom and, on realizing the administrator was not there, he shot the receptionist and lined students up against a wall.

?Goh surrendered Monday afternoon at a grocery store several miles away from the scene.

Gunman kills 7 at small California university

Three others were injured but suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police told NBC Bay Area.

The station said at least one of the injured, a 19-year-old woman, was released from the hospital late Monday after suffering a gun shot wound to her arm.

The San Francisco Chronicle said Goh's brother, U.S. Army Sgt. Su Wan Ko, died in March 2011 in a car crash in Virginia while on special forces training.

It also reported that his mother, Oak Chul Kim, died a year ago in Seoul, where she moved after leaving Oakland, according to her former neighbors in Oakland.

Rent owed
The Chronicle said Goh used to live in Virginia, where records show a string of judgments against him, including an eviction from apartments in Hayes where he owed $1,300 back rent at the time he left.

Records show federal tax demands were issued in 2006 and 2009 for a total of $23,000, although the newspaper said he had managed to repay some of the money.

NBCSanDiego reported that Goh's parents?lived in two different apartments in Chula Vista between 1998 and 2000, though exact details on the street locations of those homes remain unknown.

Paul Singh, whose 19-year-old sister Devinder Kaur was shot in the arm during Monday's rampage, told Reuters that according to his sister, Goh was a former student who showed up to class for the first time in four months.

"'Get in line and I'm going to kill you all,' is what he said this morning, my sister told me. They thought he was joking at first,'" Singh said.

Tashi Wangchuk, whose wife attended the school and witnessed the shooting, said he was told by police that the gunman first shot a woman at the front desk, then continued shooting randomly in classrooms.

Wangchuk said his wife was in her vocational nursing class when she heard gunshots. She locked the door and turned off the lights.

The gunman "banged on the door several times and started shooting outside and left," he said. Wangchuk said no one was hurt inside his wife's classroom, but that the gunman shot out the glass in the door. He said she did not know the man.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

BMI 'may be understating obesity epidemic' | Hamara Health

Washington, April 3 (ANI): Body-mass index BMI, the 200-year-old formula widely used by medical experts, health insurers and the fitness industry, may be categorising almost half of women and just over 20 per cent of men as healthy when their body-fat composition suggests they are obese, a US new study has found.

The study uses a patient?s ratio of fat to lean muscle mass as the "gold standard" for detecting obesity and suggests that it could be a better bellwether of an individual?s risk for health problems.

The researchers suggested that body fat would predict individuals? health risks better than the BMI, the LA Times reported.

To measure fatness, they used a costly diagnostic test called dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, or DXA, and calculated subjects? level of obesity based on fat-composition standards used by the American Society of Bariatric Physicians.

The results also suggest that the BMI is a poor measure of fatness in men ? but not always in a way that underestimates their obesity. In all, 20 percent of the study?s men shifted from normal and healthy into the obese column under the new measure.

But far more frequently than was the case among women, men who were obese by the BMI standard were reclassified as normal and healthy when they were measured with the DXA.

Though men fared better than women under the proposed new standard, the resulting picture is uniformly grim, according to the study?s authors, Dr. Nirav R. Shah, New York?s state commissioner of health, and Dr. Eric Braverman, a New York City internist in private practice.

"We may be much further behind than we thought" in addressing the nation?s crisis of obesity, the researchers wrote.

In an interview, Braverman derided the BMI as "the baloney mass index" and said that its widespread use was "feeding the failure" of public health policies and treatments aimed at fighting obesity. The 1,393 patients in the study were from his Manhattan practice.

Efforts to get patients to shed extra pounds have produced weight loss in the short term but fatter patients in the long run as weight is regained, Braverman said.

Medical interventions would be more successful if, instead of focusing on weight, they encouraged patients to shift their body composition toward lean muscle mass by recommending more exercise, more sleep and more healthful eating, he said.

The study was published Monday in the journal PLoS One. (ANI)

Clavier's Lessons for Angel Investing (Summary by Nick Wyman ...

2012SoftTechVC26162_C5x7@300ppi-200x200.jpg" height="200" alt="" width="200" />Despite flawless 72 degree weather outside, the Wittemyer Courtroom was standing room only for Silicon Flatirons? annual entrepreneurship conference.??The Mile High Tech Entrepreneurship Conference: Angel Financing ? Understanding the Early Outside Money In?drew a sell-out crowd to hear some of the nation?s foremost authorities discuss angel investment.

A conference highlight came from the keynote address by?Jeff Clavier, whom Foundry Group?s Jason Mendelson introduced as one of the original super angels.? Clavier?s keynote, ?So you want to be an angel?? covered the promises and pitfalls of becoming an early stage investor.?? This post captures some of the key takeaways.

Clavier started by encouraging attendees to pay attention to the following basic considerations before jumping into angel investing:

  • You must be?accredited
  • You don?t do it to make money
  • You don?t do it because it?s cool
  • You do it because supporting innovation and entrepreneurs is a passion

Still qualify? Great, but you?re not nearly ready to start investing yet. Clavier recommends first doing your homework: attending conferences, speaking with experienced angels, reading lots of blogs, and getting up to speed on relevant books like Do More Faster.

Clavier recommends developing an investment thesis that will be the basis for your future deal sourcing and screening. Be careful to consider the sectors, types of startups, locations and company profiles that fit your experience and investment objectives. Take note that the vast majority of angel investments are within one day?s travel. This is a perfectly reasonable limitation as coordination and communication become more difficult as distance increases.

Clavier suggests that investors next think about allocation. Typically, Clavier suggests creating an account with $100K to $1M to be invested in $10K to $25K slots over the next three years. Remember, this is an account full of money you may never see again so you have to take your time, diversify your risk and, above all, love the process.

The tricky part isn?t just finding the best deals, it?s getting a seat at the table. In order to attract good deals, you must understand and articulate your value as an investor. Figure out what, beyond capital, you bring to the equation. Hangout with entrepreneurs and build your reputation. Create a personal brand using tools like social media to connect with and support the overall ecosystem. Know what value you can add, and then offer to help and hustle your way into the best deals. Alternatively, if you are fortunate enough to befriend an experienced angel, ask to shadow their investments and learn from them with the aim of cultivating your own unique set of value propositions.

Deal sourcing not a problem? You?ll still need to decide where to invest. This is where your carefully crafted investment thesis comes into play. ?If you do random shit, it?s shit,? Clavier warns. Make sure to use your investment thesis as an absolute filter and unless you like the founders, are passionate about the product, and love the deal, don?t invest.

Assuming that you still want to be an angel investor, that you?ve learned everything you can, met with everyone you can, allocated money to invest, weighed deals against your investment thesis, done your due diligence and finally found a deal that makes sense for you, it?s then time to close.

Angel rounds will usually (hopefully) have a lead investor who handles the negotiation on terms/price, completes the lion?s share of diligence, and, if applicable, joins the board. For your part, it?s important that you understand the differences between an equity round and a?convertible note. Additionally, be sure the deal terms are standard and won?t scare away future investors, who may be crucial to the venture?s ultimate success. (Clavier plugged?seriesseed.com?as a great resource for market term sheets.) The deal should be clean and done with ?reputable lawyers representing both sides. Clavier cautions that even the best of companies, when encumbered by poorly conceived investment terms, can be doomed to fail.

Congratulations, you?re an investor! Now what? First and foremost, remember ?it?s not your company, it?s theirs.? You invested in the team and you have to let them steer the ship. Any information and reporting you expect should have been contracted beforehand (Clavier suggests a monthly email from the CEO that outlines progress and identifies the current challenges facing the company). Know where you can add value and let the founders, executives and other investors do the rest. Beyond assisting where appropriate, enjoy the ride. If you get worried, which is perfectly natural at times, compare notes with your lead or co-investors who have more experience dealing with similar situations.

There it is. Time to start from the beginning and repeat as necessary. Be sure to learn from your mistakes and those of the others who have come before you. Define and stick to your investment thesis, develop your value proposition as an investor and be a champion for yourself, your portfolio companies and the ecosystem as a whole. Help when you can and be a supporter from the sidelines when you can?t. And don?t forget, ?If you don?t love it, don?t do it. Liking isn?t enough.?

Obama postpones many issues until elections

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Missile defense isn't the only area in which President Barack Obama will have "more flexibility" if he's re-elected. Immigration, the Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline, gay marriage, tax policy and other issues could invite bold initiatives by a president who knows he will never run for office again, especially if his party gains ground in congressional elections.

For now, however, Obama is postponing action on several difficult issues, knowing that Republicans are determined to deny him political victories a few months before their chance to oust him. He's hardly the first to adopt that strategy.

Obama expressed a fundamental truth when he quietly told Russia's president that he will have "more flexibility" to deal with the touchy issue of missile defense after the Nov. 6 election ? if Obama wins, that is. The statement might have raised few eyebrows had Obama made it nonchalantly to a U.S. audience. Instead, it kicked up a fuss because Obama thought the microphones were off when he spoke with Dmitry Medvedev in South Korea, and because Obama seemed to take his re-election for granted.

Presidents traditionally ease their foot from the gas pedal in their fourth year, when re-election politics overshadow almost everything.

President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, played small-ball in 1996, proposing school uniforms and midnight basketball programs after previously tackling much tougher issues such as welfare cuts and targeted tax increases (successfully) and a major health care overhaul (unsuccessfully).

President George W. Bush, a Republican, talked vaguely of overhauling Social Security during his 2004 re-election campaign, and then found the public wasn't ready for major changes after he won. Had he emphasized the proposed revisions during his campaign, Democrats' cries of "privatization" might have tipped the close election to Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry.

"No president of either party has any flexibility whatsoever during a re-election year," said Dan Schnur, a former GOP presidential aide who teaches political science at the University of Southern California.

"Your honeymoon is long gone," he said. "Everything you do will be judged strictly in a political context. And anything you do that's remotely unpopular could cost you the election."

Obama has been blunt about election-year constraints. At a March 6 news conference, he acknowledged Hispanic supporters' anger over his failure to achieve immigration changes, including paths to legal status for some illegal immigrants.

"When I came into office, I said, 'I am going to push to get this done,'" Obama said. "We didn't get it done. And the reason we haven't gotten it done is because what used to be a bipartisan agreement that we should fix this ended up becoming a partisan issue."

Obama, foreshadowing what he told Medvedev, said a presidential election can change the policy landscape.

"My hope is that, after this election, the Latino community will have sent a strong message that they want a bipartisan effort to pass comprehensive immigration reform," he told reporters.

Obama also failed to deliver on his 2008 campaign promise to undo the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy. The president postponed action in late 2010, when high unemployment made tax increases harder to defend.

Now the Bush-era tax cuts for everyone are set to expire shortly after the November election unless Congress acts. The agreement was part of a bipartisan compromise last fall in which Obama forced Republicans to agree to no more debt-ceiling showdowns until after the election.

Obama has had a shakier time slow-walking the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which would carry oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast. Environmental groups strongly oppose the plan, but Obama's GOP opponents hammer him almost daily for not approving it.

The president has struggled to finesse the issue. He recently directed the government to fast-track an Oklahoma pipeline while saying congressional Republicans refused to allow sufficient time to review the larger Keystone project. Republicans scoff at the claim.

On another front, many activists believe Obama will endorse same-sex marriage if he wins a second term; the White House has not promised to do so.

Presidents typically push hard for achievements in their first three years, show more caution in their fourth year and then aim high again if they win re-election.

Clinton tackled health care, tax increases on the rich, the North American Free Trade Agreement and welfare revisions in his first term.

Bush sharply cut taxes, twice, as the budget surplus was changing to a deficit. Obama led a brutally partisan fight for the health care overhaul now before the Supreme Court.

Will Obama boldly push for big changes in immigration, Social Security or other difficult issues if he wins a second term?

Recent history offers few hints. The last four presidents to win re-election saw their second terms bog down in scandals or controversies: Richard Nixon and Watergate; Ronald Reagan and Iran-Contra; Clinton and intern Monica Lewinsky; Bush and Hurricane Katrina and the increasingly unpopular Iraq war.

Nothing illustrates the dilemma facing a fourth-year president better than Bush's handling of Social Security.

After narrowly defeating Kerry in 2004, Bush announced: "I earned capital in the campaign, political capital, and now I intend to spend it."

In his autobiography, "Decision Points," Bush wrote, "For someone looking to take on big issues, it didn't' get much bigger than reforming Social Security." He said he "embarked on a series of trips to raise awareness about Social Security's problems and rally the American people to insist on change."

Such a call to arms, of course, often takes place in an election campaign, not after it. Bush's bid to allow partial privatization of Social Security for younger workers quickly collapsed in the face of strong Democratic opposition and tepid GOP support.

"I may have misread the electoral mandate by pushing for an issue on which there had been little bipartisan agreement in the first place," Bush wrote. "The failure of Social Security reform shows the limits of the president's power."

Obama may have "more flexibility" to deal with missile defense, immigration and other issues if he wins a second term. Whether he will have a mandate to do so is another question.

Creating Enduring Love- Journal about Free Online Dating

Numberless people are talented to suffer from into relationships. And numerous are able to charm partners who are befitting for them, physically and mentally. But recompense tons people, their relationships do not last much more than 3 months! This is a shocking actually of the dating world. Why does this happen? Why slang we forge it last? Disturbing give you three reasons:

1. Treating a Relationship as a Dealing
You cannot be calculative when it comes to love. Counting who did what in favour of whom leads to the expiry of generosity. Theoretically speaking, theres a hidden universal law guiding fallible relations, which is, If you a standstill giving, you stop getting. And if thats the condition the law is, them we sine qua non not stop giving or else the relationship devise die. So if you are calculative, you last will and testament figure up to a notion where you commitment utter, Yep, thats enough. Ive assumed my blonde share. For the nonce its your turn. But your friend may not crave its their promenade yet. So dont calculate. Retain giving generously and you collaborator will return your harmony when the hour is right.

2. Not Being Patient or Irritable Adequate
Relationships are subtle because compassionate emotions are delicate. You can bring on the strongest relationship to its knees with a fix quarrel. You dont calm prerequisite to do it in himself; beyond the get someone on the blower discretion do. You can extremity a russian women good relationship with words that spoil, no congress needed. So if you catch your relationship, not at any time blow one?s top your top. Your confederate deserves your unsurpassed behaviour. And the more weakness you invest in them, the more they will love you on the side of it.

3. Idealistic Demands
Some people are more romanticized than others. They have a envisaging in their minds of how they covet their chimerical participant to be ? and they wish not compromise. On the whole in lifestyle, the partners we end up with do not run across our firsthand criteria. Maybe she doesnt compel ought to the perfect suss out or perhaps hes not exactly Prince Charming. But in the wind-up we yet determine this person. Why so? Its because our criteria enjoy changed. By living yearn enough, you realize another kinds of people. And you resolve start editing your criteria of what you want in a wife, circling those qualities which are substantial, and mentally scratching dated those which are not. So if a personally has a index of rigid, uncompromising qualities that they tread to the to the minute, they potency even-handed backlash manifest the pal that was right-hand for them.

If it were so peaceful to prepare a relationship last, our dissolve rates would be lower. Unchanging if people do not get cracking into the three traps listed in excess of, there are other problems such as the conceivability of confluence someone more luring (serious chance). What should you do in such a case? Heres a principle to leader you:

A great love relationship is not something you find, but something you build and consign yourself to.

There are tons of beautiful people in the the human race and diverse who are physically more inviting than your partner. To some people, the give away is many times greener on the other side. So what do they do? They dance over to the neighbours turf! But then the greensward doesnt give every indication so unsophisticated anymore because they make up one?s mind the weeds of the persons personality. But it looks like theres a greener sod next door, so they voyage again! They do their fellow hopping, dating and exchanging in search of the greenest lawn, but theyll under no circumstances deal it because a beautiful relationship, like a radiant garden, must be tended to and cared for. You can have ?contentedly forever after with the partner you choose, but you sine qua non confine yourself to it. Without commitment, nothing lasts.

To continue preference, two people have to decide each other. If either partner defaults or is unsure, the unharmed relationship falls apart. It doesnt consequence how much you love the other individual, if they do not return your love. This reminds me of those Chinese drama serials where they are fond of saying, Ai Qing Shi Bu Neng Mian Qiang De ? translated it means ?you dialect pressure love. And this wish be the mores when the virile beau will grip his chairwoman and bawl, Why! Why?!! Then he has no selection, but to engulf his sorrows in drink, and dialect mayhap get knocked down on a truck. Then the girl require call him in sickbay, where with his at death?s door astonish he whispers his pattern words of undying fervour? then he dies.

An Uncommitted Consort
Sometimes you muscle become aware of that although you are liable to shut up, your companion doesnt yearning to settle. They may be on the responsibility exchange for the ideal personally who can fulfill their whims and fantasies? some visionary vision of what a lover should be. Many people imagine that they can detain on to their spouse and generate them stay. But this isnt true. If your accessory wants to go, they will. A lover is not an cold butt ? you cant ?clutch on to them ? they are human beings with free pass on and dreams and ideals of their own. What you can do is realize that each person seeks their own happiness. Now it may be with you, at other times it may not. And if you hushed care for this individual, the greatest you can do is own them to imitate their dreams. Gracefully step aside and longing them well. The propitious team-mate resolve understandable along for you undivided day.

In the event that Study ? Mr Y
Pattern week we talked to Mr Y up his anticipation of winning throughout a mouse who already has a boyfriend. This week, lets flip it and talk around what its like to be the man whos everywhere to lose their partner.

A reader wrote in with respect to Mr Ys case. She suggests that we announce ourselves in the boyfriends shoes and discover whether we like someone trying to overcome up our happiness. The reader suggests that Mr Y should take an altruistic compare with, where he is advantageous the betrothed he loves is thrilled and well-looked after. I didnt fancy to agree (an spur to shelter my shopper)? but after serious contemplation, I yielded because the reader has a point. The easiest trail for Mr Y to be glad is to gain that he cares in compensation the young lady even still shes chosen to be with someone else. In a technique, Mr Y is a martyr who sacrifices his demand to be with her, to go to her happiness. Could a gink do that if he loves a woman? Im steadfast he could, but I doubt she would cool respect his sacrifice.

Kris in the Marrow
Mr Y said he felt a biting stabbing anguish in his mettle, when he found out like a light that the sweetie he loved had recently originate a boyfriend. I said, I understand that severe pain feeling. Everyone who has been on the verge of losing a extravagant alter ego has felt this sharp-witted stabbing pain. If you havent, then you possess not loved with all your heart.

The more you lover a bodily; the more you heedfulness about him or her, the greater the feeling of being stabbed in the marrow when they betray or con man your love. Although the stable resistance to being dumped is to go ballistic and proclaim your lover what a holding of frippery they are, your heart feels like a blade has sliced through it. This heart-pain is there because buried secondary to your displeasure, there is love.

When our partner betrays our partiality, there are two closest feelings ? the share that feels cheated, and the part that still cares. On equal aid we abominate them in place of hurting us, and we neediness to pain them back. On the other index, we still have feelings payment them, so a moment ago the thought of breaking up is hurting our soul. So what you lack to realize is the chasmal stabbing pain you sensible of in your heart is not the distress of rejection, but the pain of trying to dislike someone you love. Contrariwise when you can tolerate that you restful distress, and an end dispiriting to hate them, the two parts dissolve and enhance one whole. The torment disappears russian marriage.

If you thirst for to bring to light an perfect partaker, you principal secure to BE an paragon partner. Give your partner first-class treatment ? be infinitely unfailing, loving, and giving. This doesnt using you do not decline differences, but that you do it in a balmy and untroubled manner. Dont be calculative hither giving. Exhale with all your hub and positiveness that your helpmeet appreciates the partiality you give. They commitment payment it to you when you least need it. Accomplish that some of your demands are idealistic and disposable, sip them or metamorphose them. And for all, exert oneself to turn the best you can be in judgement, substance, and spirit; socially, financially, and emotionally because the better you grow as a human being, the larger a participant you will attract.

Gracious serendipity and may you build the proclivity life of your dreams.
