The Real Estalker: In Tom Cruise Real Estate News...

...in case any of y'all care, soon-to-be-divorced Tom Cruise is rumored to be looking at swank (and private) spreads in some of the more expensive communities around New York City where he can play daddy-host to daughter Suri when his visitation times come around.

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

So the story goes in the New York Post this morning, Mister Cruise recently took Suri along to peep and poke around an unlisted, 11-acre waterfront spread with a 13,500 square foot main manse in the sleepy river side enclave of Sneden's Landing, NY.

Mister and soon-to-be ex-Missus Cruise already maintain a number of luxury residences that include a Beverly Hills estate bought in 2007 for just over $30,000,000, a gated compound above Mulholland Drive in the Hollywood Hills?bought for close to $10,000,000 in 2005 and rumored by celebrity (property) gossips to be some sort of Scientology retreat, but we don't have any proof of that?a secluded mountain estate in Telluride, CO that Mister Cruise owned long before he ever married Katie, and at least one apartment at the American Felt Building in lower Manhattan's East Village.

There are rumors and reports Tom and Katie coughed up $15,075,000 for a six-story, 8,000+ square foot brownstone in Greenwich Village in summer 2009 but, in truth, we're not convinced they did and certainly we haven't seen any hard evidence of that.

And, of course, let's not forget the New York City apartment soon-to-be-third-ex-Missus Cruise secretly leased?or "secretly" leased, depending on your level of cynicism regarding the matter?as part of her marriage exit strategy. Other high-profile (full and/or part-time) residents of the building are rumored and reported to include Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, Lisa Stansfield, Bobby Flay, Kyle MacLachlan, and, up in one of the penthouse pads, Nick Jonas.

Deadly ebola outbreak in Ugandan capital

Uganda's president Monday warned against shaking hands and other physical contact after the first reported death from the deadly Ebola virus in the capital Kampala.

"The Ministry of Health are tracing all the people who have had contact with the victims," Yoweri Museveni said in a state broadcast, adding that 14 people had died in total since Ebola broke out in western Uganda three weeks ago.

One person believed to have contracted the virus in western Uganda was reported dead in Kampala's Mulago Hospital, Museveni said, calling on people not to shake hands to avoid the spread of the virus.

"Ebola spreads by contact when you contact each other physically... avoid shaking of hands, because that can cause contact through sweat, which can cause problems," Museveni said.

"Do not take on burying somebody who has died from symptoms that look like Ebola -- instead call health workers because they know how to do it... avoid promiscuity because this sickness can also go through sex," he added.

Seven doctors and 13 health workers at Mulago Hospital are in quarantine after "at least one or two cases" were taken there, with one later dying, he said.

The latest outbreak started in Uganda's western Kibale district, around 200 kilometres (125 miles) from Kampala, and around 50 kilometres from the border with Democratic Republic of Congo.

The fatal case in Kampala was a health worker who "had attended to the dead at Kagadi hospital" in Kibale, Health Minister Christine Ondoa told reporters.

She is believed to have travelled independently to Kampala -- possibly on public transport -- after her three-month old baby died, Ondoa added.

Results of tests were still awaited, but it is "presumed" she died of Ebola, said Dennis Lwamafa, Uganda's commissioner for disease control.

"I appeal to you to first of all report all cases which appear to be like Ebola, and these are high fever, vomiting, sometimes diarrhoea, and with bleeding," Museveni added.

"When you handle this case well you can eliminate Ebola quickly."

According to experts, despite being extremely virulent the disease is containable because it kills its victims faster than it can spread to new ones.

It has a fatality ratio of between 23 and 90 percent, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Seven people suspected of having the virus have been isolated in Kigadi hospital, Ondoa said.

The nearest death to the capital previously had been in May 2011 in Bombo, 35 kilometres (21 miles) from Kampala, a city of some 1.5 million people.

The rare haemorrhagic disease, named after a small river in DR Congo, killed 37 people in western Uganda in 2007 and at least 170 in the north of the country in 2000.

However, Museveni said that the virus had not been immediately identified this time, resulting in a delay.

"The bleeding which normally accompanies Ebola did not take place initially among these patients," he said, adding that health workers at first did not therefore realise what the problem was.

"Because of that delay the sickness spread."

Health officials said that the source of the outbreak had yet to be confirmed but that the villages affected were located close to forests famous for several species of primates.

"The site where most of the cases occurred are close to Kibale forest where there are a lot of monkeys and birdlife," said WHO representative for Uganda, Joaquim Saweka, adding that "so far the WHO does not recommend any restriction of movement."

Ebola is characterised by the sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat, often followed by vomiting, diarrhoea and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding, according to the WHO.

It spreads by direct contact with the blood or other body fluids of infected persons.

"I wish you good luck, and may God rest the souls of those who died in eternal peace," Museveni added.

In this Thursday, July 14, 2012 photo, Bertha Domimguez prepares gluten-free dough at Pure Knead bakery sandwich bread in Decatur, Ga. Scientists suggest that there may be more Celiac disease today because people eat more processed wheat products than in decades past, which use types of wheat that have a higher gluten content. Or it could be due to changes made to wheat, said the Mayo Clinic's Dr. Joseph Murray. In the 1950s, scientists began cross-breeding wheat to make hardier, shorter and better-growing plants. It was the basis of a so-called "Green Revolution" that boosted wheat harvests worldwide. (AP Photo/John Bazemore)

(AP) ? It sounds like an unfolding epidemic: A decade ago, virtually no one in the U.S. seemed to have a problem eating gluten in bread and other foods. Now, millions do.

Gluten-free products are flying off grocery shelves, and restaurants are boasting of meals with no gluten. Celebrities on TV talk shows chat about the digestive discomfort they blame on the wheat protein they now shun. Some churches even offer gluten-free Communion wafers.

"I don't know whether there's more people getting this or that more people are noticing" they have a problem, said the Rev. Richard Allen, pastor at Mamaroneck United Methodist Church, north of New York City.

Or is it just another food fad?

Faddishness is a big part of it. Americans will spend an estimated $7 billion this year on foods labeled gluten-free, according to the market research firm Mintel. But the best estimates are that more than half the consumers buying these products ? perhaps way more than half ? don't have any clear-cut reaction to gluten.

They buy gluten-free because they think it will help them lose weight, or because they seem to feel better, or because they mistakenly believe they are sensitive to gluten.

"We have a lot of self-diagnosing going on out there," said Melissa Abbott, who tracks the gluten-free market for the Hartman Group, a Seattle-area market research organization.

Fads aside, research suggests more people are truly getting sick from the gluten found in wheat, rye and barley, but the reasons aren't clear.

In the most serious cases, gluten triggers celiac disease. The condition causes abdominal pain, bloating and intermittent diarrhea. Those with the ailment don't absorb nutrients well and can suffer weight loss, fatigue, rashes and other problems.

It was once considered extremely rare in the U.S. But about 20 years ago, a few scientists began exploring why celiac disease was less common here than in Europe and other countries. They concluded that it wasn't less common here; it was just under-diagnosed.

More recently, a research team led by the Mayo Clinic's Dr. Joseph Murray looked at blood samples taken from Americans in the 1950s and compared them with samples taken from people today, and determined it wasn't just better diagnosis driving up the numbers. Celiac disease actually was increasing. Indeed, the research confirms estimates that about 1 percent of U.S. adults have it today, making it four times more common now than it was 50 years ago, Murray and his colleagues reported Tuesday in the American Journal of Gastroenterology.

That translates to nearly 2 million Americans with celiac disease.

Celiac disease is different from an allergy to wheat, which affects a much smaller number of people, mostly children who outgrow it.

Scientists suggest that there may be more celiac disease today because people eat more processed wheat products like pastas and baked goods than in decades past, and those items use types of wheat that have a higher gluten content. Gluten helps dough rise and gives baked goods structure and texture.

Or it could be due to changes made to wheat, Murray said.

In the 1950s, scientists began cross-breeding wheat to make hardier, shorter and better-growing plants. It was the basis of the Green Revolution that boosted wheat harvests worldwide. Norman Borlaug, the U.S. plant scientist behind many of the innovations, won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work.

But the gluten in wheat may have somehow become even more troublesome for many people, Murray said.

That also may have contributed to what is now called "gluten sensitivity."

Doctors recently developed a definition for gluten sensitivity, but it's an ambiguous one. It's a label for people who suffer bloating and other celiac symptoms and seem to be helped by avoiding gluten, but don't actually have celiac disease. Celiac disease is diagnosed with blood testing, genetic testing, or biopsies of the small intestine.

The case for gluten sensitivity was bolstered last year by a very small but often-cited Australian study. Volunteers who had symptoms were put on a gluten-free diet or a regular diet for six weeks, and they weren't told which one. Those who didn't eat gluten had fewer problems with bloating, tiredness and irregular bowel movements.

Clearly, "there are patients who are gluten-sensitive," said Dr. Sheila Crowe, a San Diego-based physician on the board of the American Gastroenterological Association.

What is hotly debated is how many people have the problem, she added. It's impossible to know "because the definition is nebulous," she said.

One of the most widely cited estimates comes from Dr. Alessio Fasano, a University of Maryland researcher who led studies that changed the understanding of how common celiac disease is in the U.S.

Fasano believes 6 percent of U.S. adults have gluten sensitivity. But that's based on a review of patients at his clinic ? hardly a representative sample of the general public.

Other estimates vary widely, he said. "There's a tremendous amount of confusion out there," Fasano said.

Whatever the number, marketing of foods without gluten has exploded. Those with celiac disease, of course, are grateful. Until only a few years ago, it was difficult to find grocery and dining options.

"It's a matter of keeping people safe," said Michelle Kelly, an Atlanta-area woman who started a gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, nut-free bakery in 2010 after her son was diagnosed with celiac disease. While conventional bakers use wheat flour, she uses such ingredients as millet flour, sorghum flour, brown rice flour and tapioca starch.

At one of Atlanta's largest and busiest health food stores, Return to Eden, manager Troy DeGroff said over a third of his customers come in for gluten-free products for themselves or their family.

"Thank you, Elisabeth Hasselbeck," he said, referring to one of the hosts of the daytime talk show "The View" who helped popularize gluten-free eating.

It's hard to say how many of his customers have a medical reason for skipping gluten. But "they're at least paying attention to what they're sticking in their mouth," he said.

On a recent Friday afternoon, several customers bought gluten-free, though none had been diagnosed with celiac disease or had digestive problems from eating wheat.

Julia White said she picks up gluten-free items when her granddaughters visit. They've been diagnosed with problems, she said. "They don't just make this up."

Another customer, Meagan Jain, said she made gluten-free cupcakes with a school friend and liked the taste. But she doesn't buy gluten-free often because "it's expensive."

For her, "It's a fad. It's part of the eclectic, alternative lifestyle."

Mortgage Fraud Blog - 3 Go to Jail for Arson, Insurance and ...

Gerardo Wilhelm, Miami, Florida, Juan J. Flores, Ocala, Florida, and Alejandro Figueredo, Miami, for their participation in a townhouse arson, mortgage fraud and insurance fraud scheme that resulted in losses of more than $500,000. On July 24, 2012, U.S. District Judge Kathleen M. Williams sentenced Figueredo to 40 months in prison and Wilhelm to 54 months in prison. Flores was sentenced on July 19, 2012 by Judge Williams to 60 months in prison.

According to the indictment and statements made in court during the guilty pleas, Wilhelm, a real estate agent, Flores, a mortgage broker, and Figueredo, an insurance adjuster, engaged in a string of federal crimes involving a townhouse in Miami-Dade County, Florida. In early 2006, Wilhelm obtained mortgage loans to purchase the property by misrepresenting his and his wife's employment and by falsely stating that they intended to use of the property as their primary residence.

Wilhelm then rented the townhouse until it no longer generated income. In late 2007, after foreclosure proceedings were initiated against him, Wilhelm hired Flores and Figueredo to burn down the house. Figueredo received second and third-degree burns to approximately a third of his body from the explosion. After the fire, defendant Wilhelm submitted a fraudulent insurance claim for the damage, and received approximately $180,000 in insurance proceeds, made payable to the lender. However, Wilhelm forged the endorsement on the insurance check and kept the money.

After misappropriating the insurance money, Wilhelm obtained a loan modification, in the form of a short sale, from the defrauded lender that held the mortgage loans on the townhouse. In carrying out this short sale, Wilhelm hired a straw buyer to purchase the property. After the sale was completed, the straw buyer transferred the townhouse title to Wilhelm. Thereafter, Wilhelm and his accomplices sold the townhouse for $240,000, resulting in a $500,000 loss to the financial institutions.

Wifredo A. Ferrer, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida; Hugo J. Barrera, Special Agent in Charge, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF); and James K. Loftus, Director, Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), announced the sentencings.

U.S. Attorney Ferrer commended the hard work of the Federal State Mortgage Fraud Strike Force, with special commendation to ATF and Miami-Dade Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Roger Cruz.

Indonesia challenges EU over duties at WTO

GENEVA (Reuters) - Indonesia went to the World Trade Organization on Monday to overturn anti-dumping duties imposed by the European Union in its first such complaint against the bloc since winning a WTO court challenge against the United States.

Indonesia wants to overturn EU anti-dumping duties on imports of Indonesian fatty alcohols, which are used in the chemicals industry, the WTO said. Such duties are imposed when a country thinks imports are priced at an unfair discount.

By demanding "consultations" with the EU, Indonesia has triggered the first stage in a trade dispute, which may escalate into an adjudication battle if not resolved within 60 days.

The case is the latest in a series of challenges in which big developing economies are hitting back at assertions that their exports are unfairly priced or subsidized. India, China and Brazil have all initiated disputes in the past four months.

Indonesia's last involvement in litigation ended in April when it won an appeal against a U.S. ban on the sale of clove-flavored cigarettes, most of which come from Indonesia, as well as other flavors such as cherry and cinnamon.

The U.S. law, which was intended to stop children smoking, was found to be discriminatory because it did not also target menthol cigarettes.

Indonesia has not been on the receiving end of trade litigation since 1996, the year after the WTO was created. But its own trade practices have come increasingly under fire, with the United States blaming it this year for putting up barriers to imports and Japan angry at its curbs on metals exports.

Both those countries, and the EU, have also raised questions in WTO committee meetings about Indonesia's "local content" rules for investments in telecoms and the energy sector, which they say unfairly discriminate against foreign firms.

Such questions sometimes escalate into trade disputes if not resolved by the answers raised in committee sessions, and if the complainants feel the WTO litigation system gives them a good chance of winning the dispute.

Where Could I Stumble On Some Fantastic Tattoo Designs : Arts ...

Tattoos are getting ever more popular these days. Though, it remains a big decision, also it is one that has to be taken in stages. When you?ve decided to get a tattoo you have to decide on a design. It?s recommended to visit as many taboo designs studios as you can. This would allow you? to find out more about the skills of the artists. Study the designs they?re offering, and also talk to other people who have been customers at that studio. During the visit also look at the apparatus they use and also the cleanliness of the environment.

Another thing that you must do is to visit tattoo design web sites and discover what the latest styles are. There is a good chance that you?re going to find some remarkable designs by gifted artists on the Internet that you could incorporate in your customized design. It is even possible that you?ll find someone who?s happy to provide you with some feedback on your design ideas. They might make some imaginative suggestions, or tell you where they consider the design could be hard to reproduce.

One of the most tricky parts of this whole exercise is to explain what you want. This is especially true if you have no, or little, design skills yourself. It might take a great deal of time for the tattoo designer to arrive at a design that matches your desires. {You have to be extremely clear in what you want} You must present images and accurate descriptions to the artist and eventually you will find a tattoo designs you?re happy with. The dragon tattoo is in fact the most popular of all. See it here: visit site.
.

The artist needs to know several details, aside from the tattoo design, before they can begin inking. They will need to know where you would like it, the colors you would like them to use, and the actual size It is impossible to create a really complicated design in a really small place. If they attempt to achieve this the probabilities are it?s going to blur. This is one of the reasons why it?s critical you understand what the artist is capable of before they start. Where you select to have the tattoo placed can be important. You will wish to be proud of your design and let other people see it, but it may conflict with other factors. There could be an issue such as your employers not wishing it being able to be seen at work. Therefore placing it on a part of your body that may be easily covered by your work clothing may be necessary.

Another thing to think about if you have decided to get a tattoo is the best time to get it done. Quite a lot of people don?t realize that the process doesn?t finish once the artist has finished their tattoo designs. There is a phase of after-care needed. It is essential that you protect your new tattoo design from the sun for no less than 14 days. You must also keep away from scratching at it, or the area might become infected. There is no point spending all of the money and time to get an elaborate tattoo if you aren?t prepared to take care of it..

PETA Takes 'Bets' On Sen. Chuck Grassley's Death As 'Meatless Mondays' Controversy Continues

PETA upped the ante Thursday, jumping headfirst into a feud involving the Department of Agriculture, the meat lobby and Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley.

In response to a controversial tweet -- now retracted -- by the USDA in support of the "Meatless Mondays" program, Grassley Tweeted he was planning on eating an extra helping of meat in order to "compensate for stupid USDA recommendation abt a meatless Monday."

But on Thursday, PETA posted a scathing missive on its website, bemoaning the fact that the senior senator is apparently "anxious to show his campaign contributors that he will fight to the death (literally, perhaps) over Americans' right to be sick and fat."

The post, written by Alisa Mullins, continues on to say: "We're taking bets (place yours in the comments section below) on how long it will take Sen. Grassley to succumb to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or some other meat-related disease."

In a statement to POLITICO, PETA President Ingrid Newkirk noted that the 78-year-old politician must surely "already have high blood pressure... Were he a physician instead of a politician, his attempt to keep factory-farm funding by promoting meat consumption would constitute malpractice.?

The senator's office was not amused by the colorful rhetoric, and spokesperson Jill Kozeny slammed PETA for criticizing the senator.

"The comments from PETA are shameful and way outside the mainstream,? Kozeny said in a statement to POLITICO. ?Sen. Grassley is representing his constituents. He?d like USDA to remember who it?s supposed to work for, too.?

The controversy began on Monday when the Agriculture Department, which promotes American food products including meat, tweeted in support of the "Meatless Mondays" campaign, only to be met with swift criticisms from the National Cattlemen?s Beef Association.

Founded in conjunction with the school of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, Meatless Mondays aims to provide information and recipes for healthy, environmentally friendly meat-free options, according to its website.

"Our goal is to help you reduce your meat consumption by 15% in order to improve your personal health and the health of the planet," the site explains.

At least one of Grassley's peers thinks the conflict has been blown out of proportion.

Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin recently issued less-than-serious call for "Fishless Fridays," the Gazette reports. The practice would offset any drop in consumption of fish by devout Catholics observing the church's no meat on Fridays rule.

?We need ?Fishless Fridays? now because they are depleting the fishes in the ocean, you know, and that?s getting to be a problem,? Harkin told reporters in jest. Harkin said that he eats his "fair share" of meat, but that the nation should be concentrating on more pressing issues, such as balancing the budget and getting people back to work.

The Noble Eightfold Path ? The Mystic Circle

In Buddhism, the Noble Eightfold Path is the way to the end of suffering. ?It is a practical guideline to ethical and mental development with the goal of freeing the individual from attachments and delusions; and it finally leads to understanding the truth about all things.? (Knierim). These are not to be seen as steps, but as individual principles that have relationships with each other. What are these principles? They are: right understanding, right thinking, right speech, right conduct, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. They are broken into three separate groups: Wisdom (Panna) for the first two; Ethical Conduct (Sila) for the next three; and Mental Development (Samadhi) for the last three.

  1. Right Understanding (samma ditthi): This means to see things as they really are. It also means to recognize and understand the Four Noble Truths (Robinson). One must?understand: impermanent and imperfect nature of worldly objects and ideas; and the law of karma. ?Since our view of the world forms our thoughts and our actions, right view yields right thoughts and right?actions.? (Knierim).
  2. Right Thinking/Intention (samma sankappa): This refers to the cognitive aspect of wisdom. It can be described as ?following the right path in life? (Robinson). It can be described as a commitment to ethical and mental self-improvement. ?Buddha distinguishes three types of right intentions: (1) the intention of renunciation, which means resistance to the pull of desire, (2) the intention of good will, meaning resistance to feelings of anger and aversion, and (3) the intention of harmlessness, meaning not to think or act cruelly, violently, or aggressively, and to develop?compassion.? (Knierim).
  3. Right Speech (samma vaca): Do not lie. Do not criticize. Do not condemn. Do not gossip. Do not use harsh language. To put it in a more positive text: ?this means to tell the truth, to speak friendly, warm, and gently and to talk only when?necessary.? (Knierim).
  4. Right Conduct (samma kammanta): This involves the body as a natural means of expression, as it refers to the deeds that involve bodily actions. ?Unwholesome actions lead to unsound states of mind, while wholesome actions lead to sound?states of mind.? (Knierim). This also says that we must follow the Five Precepts (Robinson).
  5. Right Livelihood (samma ajiva): One should make their living in a legal and peaceful way. One should not harm others to gain their wealth.
  6. Right Effort (samma vayama): Promote good thoughts and conquer evil thoughts. ?Without effort, which is in itself?an act of will, nothing can be achieved, whereas misguided effort distracts the mind from its task, and confusion will?be the consequence.? (Knierim).
  7. Right Mindfulness (samma sati): ?Become aware of your body, mind and feelings.? (Robinson). Right mindfulness is rooted in clear perception and it penetrates impressions without getting carried away.
  8. Right Concentration (samma samadhi): One must meditate to achieve a higher consciousness, which develops right concentration.

As you can see, the Noble Eightfold Path has so much Truth in it. These are great principles to apply to your life. Hopefully it will help lead us away from the path of suffering, into the path that leads to Nirvana.
