Dog First Aid ? Impalement | Love My Pets GPS Pet Safety Products ...

August 11, 2012 ? Jerry Welsh

Dogs often get into tight spots that cause them various injuries but being impaled is not really a common injury of dogs. Dogs though can sustain impalement injuries because these are very active and playful animals. Dogs get all kinds of injuries because these animals always find themselves in tight spots. The conditions arising from the pet?s ingestion of poisonous substances or foreign objects that caused a blockage in the airways would make an owner consider the true condition of the pet before treatment can be administered. An impalement injury will be easily noticed so that the dog owner will not wonder what accident happened to the pet.

Falling from heights is one of the most common cause of impalement injuries as the dog can be speared by a tree branch or a fence. Dogs always got something in their mouth and a stick can get stuck in the dog?s mouth. Dogs have the inclination to roam and one that has trespassed and destroyed other people?s property can be meet a sad fate from the arrow of an irate person.

Many dogs have died from impalement injuries. A dog would be so lucky to have a minor impalement injury. Serious or non-serious, an impalement injury would need a vet?s attention. The owner that has managed to remove the stick that has impaled the dog on the chest may think that a vet?s attention is no longer necessary. An impalement injury that appears minor can have a more serious effect on the dog. The stick may have caused severe damage to an internal organ. It is also possible that the impalement has caused internal bleeding.

Before bringing the pet to a veterinary facility first aid measures are very necessary to prevent the object that has impaled from creating further damage.

The pain associated with the impalement injury can turn a well tempered dog aggressive. Muzzle the injured dog before administering first aid treatment. The foreign body that was stuck into the dog must not be removed. Movements of the pet and the object that has impaled the pet must be minimized to prevent the dog?s condition from worsening. Immobilizing the pet and the foreign object will prevent the pet?s condition from getting worse . The impaled dog though can be removed from a stationary object like the steel bar on a fence. Once the pet was removed from the stationary object, first aid measures to control the bleeding must be administered while the pet is being transported to the hospital.

Mo Farah wins 5,000 meters for Olympic double

LONDON (AP) ? Mo Farah didn't want to leave anybody in doubt.

Roared on again by a boisterous, capacity crowd at the 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium, Farah surged ahead late and held on Saturday to complete a long-distance double by winning the 5,000 meters in 13 minutes, 41.66 seconds.

He still had the energy to do a few playful sit-ups on the track before he grabbed a British flag for the real celebrations.

The Somali-born Farah won the 10,000 meters on Britain's "Super Saturday" last weekend, the same night Jessica Ennis won the heptathlon and Greg Rutherford the long jump.

This Saturday, it was entirely Mo's moment. Almost nobody left the stadium until Farah was presented with his gold medal and the British anthem echoed around Olympic Park again.

"It's unbelievable," the 29-year-old Farah said. "Two gold medals, who would have thought that?"

He didn't need the sit-ups to prove himself. He didn't let the pressure of the home country's great expectations hamper him in the 10,000, and he didn't let the tactical plans of the Ethiopian runners hinder him in the 5,000, either.

Farah took the lead with 700 meters to go, staved off all challenges and, riding constant screams of encouragement, swept away on the home straight. He crossed the finish line with his arms up in triumph, then slapped his bald head and dropped to his knees.

Dejen Gebremeskel finished strongly to earn silver for Ethiopia in 13:41.98, and Thomas Longosiwa of Kenya took bronze in 13:42.36.

After his little demonstration of situps, Farah grabbed a Union Jack and took off for a victory lap.

He found his wife, Tania, who is pregnant with twins, and daughter Rhianna in the crowd lining the home stretch and hugged them.

"These two medals are for my two girls who aren't born yet," he said. "My twins are coming. They could arrive any day and the doctors told us they could arrive any time in the next 12 days. It's amazing!"

Farah, who was born in Somalia and arrived in Britain when he was 8, gave plenty of thanks.

"I want to thank everyone who has supported me, all my coaches from the past, all the people who have been part of my life, particularly my wife," he said. "Her carrying twins, it hasn't been easy. It's been a long journey of grafting and grafting."

He was the seventh man to win both the 5,000 and 10,000 titles at a single Olympics, the first from Britain. He was also the first man to win the Olympic 5,000 title as the reigning world champion.

With such crowd support for Farah, the other runners barely stood a chance.

"The crowd helped him. He ran 100 percent and they added another 10," said American runner Bernard Lagat, who finished fourth. "Everybody knew he was the favorite. I knew it. All 15 runners knew it. We were going to run against the favorite guy, he was the greatest of all."

U.S. runner Galen Rupp trains with Farah and finished second to him in the 10,000. He had a charge at the lead late in the 5,000 but faded to finish seventh, watching as his friend crossed the line first.

"Mo, he's great. Obviously a lot of pressure on him," Rupp said. "He's so well-equipped to deal with that. His personality is so laid back. I'm thrilled for him. It really couldn't happen to a better person."

Chavez: American man detained in Venezuela

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? President Hugo Chavez said Venezuelan authorities have detained an American man and are interrogating him, suspecting he could be a "mercenary" plotting to destabilize the country if the opposition loses the upcoming presidential election.

Chavez told reporters on Friday that under questioning the man said he had been a U.S. Marine.

"The man has military training and he refuses to give information. That in itself is suspicious," Chavez said on state television.

Chavez did not identify the man nor detail the accusations against him. But the case has the potential to ratchet up longstanding tensions between Venezuela and the U.S. less than two months ahead of Venezuela's presidential election.

Chavez said the man was detained while crossing into Venezuela from Colombia on a bus in the middle of the night. He said the American had entered the country illegally.

Chavez announced the man's Aug. 4 arrest on Thursday night, saying he was carrying a U.S. passport with entrance and exit stamps from countries including Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya.

A U.S. State Department official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly, said the U.S. government had not been notified of the arrest by the Venezuelan government.

He said that if the detained man is in fact a U.S. citizen, American officials expect "Venezuela will uphold its obligations under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and grant U.S. consular officials access to any detained U.S. citizen without delay."

Chavez instructed his justice minister, Tareck El Aissami, to make contact with U.S. authorities to inform them of the case. He said the detained man "has all of his human rights guaranteed."

Chavez said that when the man was detained at a National Guard post in southwestern Tachira state, he tore up part of a notebook that he had with him.

"He has all the appearance of a mercenary," Chavez said at a campaign rally on Thursday. "We are interrogating him."

Chavez suggested, without offering evidence, that the American might have been recruited by government opponents to instigate violent protests if opposition presidential candidate Henrique Capriles loses the Oct. 7 election.

Opposition lawmaker Pedro Pablo Alcantara scoffed at the president's allegations that government foes would attempt to stir up trouble if Chavez is re-elected to a new six-year term.

Alcantara accused the government of encouraging violence against its adversaries in the past while backing groups that have attacked opposition marches.

"It's the president who has promoted violence," he said.

Chavez has repeatedly accused the U.S. government of plotting against him during the past decade, though he usually has provided few specifics of such claims.

The U.S. Embassy in Caracas has been without an ambassador since July 2010. Chavez rejected the U.S. nominee for ambassador, Larry Palmer, accusing him of making disrespectful remarks about his government. That led Washington to revoke the visa of the Venezuelan ambassador.
