Britain and Ireland tuning into Netflix

Netflix on Monday announced that one million people in Britain and Ireland signed up for the film and TV show streaming Internet service in the seven months after its debut there.

California-based Netflix boasted that it was the fastest adoption rate it has seen in any territory, outpacing by several times the speed with which it took Twitter or Facebook to hit that user mark globally.

"This membership milestone is evidence that Netflix has rapidly gained popularity in (Britain) and Ireland," said Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings.

"Our British and Irish members clearly enjoy the ability to instantly watch a large variety of TV shows and films streaming from Netflix on their favorite devices whenever they want."

Comedy and drama were reported to be the most popular genres among Netflix viewers in Britain and Ireland, with Sunday nights proving the most popular time of the week for tuning in.

A survey commissioned by Netflix indicated that 10 percent of the British population devotes two or more hours daily watching TV shows delivered through the Internet.

"Consumers are beginning to spend more time enjoying entertainment services online, streaming TV and film, and this trend is only growing," Pollyanna Woodward of British technology television program The Gadget Show said in a Netflix release.

Netflix last week last week revealed plans to launch film streaming services in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden by the end of the year.

Netflix was launched in the United States in 1999 and has expanded to Britain, Canada and Latin America over the past two years.

Sugar Substitutes: A Primer

Sweet!Sugar substitutes, non-nutritive sweeteners, artificial sweeteners. Whatever you decide to call them, sugar alternatives are hotly debated and often researched. Can they aid in weight loss? Are they safe? What are they anyway?

Getting Sweeter:

The use of sugar substitutes in food products is on the rise. In 1999 there were 369 new products containing artificial sweeteners, but by 2004, the number jumped to 2,346. Next time you step into the grocery aisle, count the number of products that contain a sugar substitute. It is easy to spot them because many feature these words prominently on the package: diet, reduced sugar, sugar-free and no sugar added.

Are They Safe?

Consumers continue to question the safety of sugar substitutes. Despite concerns about a link between artificial sweeteners and cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute:??There is no clear evidence that the artificial sweeteners available commercially in the United States are associated with cancer risk in humans.?

The FDA determines the acceptable daily intake (ADI) for each sugar substitute. The ADI is the highest amount considered safe to consume each day over a person?s lifetime. With the growing number of products including sugar substitutes, you?d think that we?re close to the safe limit?we?re far from it. You can check out what?s safe for you to consume on the Acceptable Daily Intake Calculator of Non-Caloric Sweeteners.

Effects on Weight:

Recently, the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association came out with a scientific statement that non-nutritive sweetener intake could help improve body weight and glucose control. However, it?s not a very definitive statement. Here?s why. If you replace a sugar-sweetened food or beverage with a sugar-free food or beverage, theoretically you should lose weight because you?ve created a calorie deficit. The problem is, often, people justify eating a higher calorie food later in the day because they chose a lower calorie food earlier. The decision to grab that higher calorie item might have the scale tipping the wrong way.

Effects on Appetite:

There has been controversy about the effects of sugar substitutes on appetite. One study by Appetite found that non-nutritive sweeteners did not increase appetite, while a study by Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine found the opposite. Another study by the American Society for Nutrition suggests that there is not enough information to support the claim that non-nutritive sweeteners increases appetite. Sounds like this question will remain unanswered until further research is completed. In the meantime, ask yourself whether your own appetite changes with artificial sweeteners.

If you decide to consume sugar substitutes, it?s important to know what you are putting into your body. Here?s a rundown of the most commonly used sweetening alternatives:

Saccharin (Sweet ?N Low)

The first of the sugar substitutes, it was discovered in the late 1800s. It is about 300 times sweeter than sugar. You might recognize it as the sugar substitute in the pink packet.

Aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet)

This commonly used sugar substitute was discovered in 1965 and approved by the FDA in 1981. It is about 200 times sweeter than sugar. It is found in carbonated soft drinks, cereals, chewing gum, jams, multivitamins, and products such as Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi, Yoplait Light Yogurt and Jell-O Strawberry Sugar Free/Low Calorie Gelatin.

Acesulfame-K or Acesulfame Potassium

Approved by the FDA in 1998, this is 200 times sweeter than sugar and is often used in baking and cooking because it can tolerate heat. It can also be found in products such as Pepsi Max, Coke Zero and Del Monte No Sugar Added Pears.

Sucralose (Splenda)

This FDA-approved sugar substitute is 600 times sweeter than table sugar. It starts off as cane sugar. After its structure is manipulated, it cannot be absorbed by the body, which means you don?t take in any calories. Products like Powerade Zero, Smucker?s Seedless Strawberry Jam with Splenda and Heinz Reduced Sugar Tomato Ketchup are just a few that contain Sucralose.

Neotame

Approved by the FDA in 2002, this artificial sweetener is the most potent sweetener on the market?it is 7,000 times the sweetness of sucrose. It is approved for use in food such as beverages, dairy products and desserts. It can also be used in cooking and baking.

Stevia?(Pure Via and Truvia)

This plant derived sugar substitute is 200-300 times sweeter than sugar. The FDA has not approved whole-leaf or crude stevia. However, highly refined portions-Reb A and stevioside-have been considered generally recognized as safe (GRAS). Meaning, portions of the plant can be used as a sugar substitute.

Standard Chartered shares set to open up 5 percent on $340 million U.S. settlement

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Standard Chartered Plc's Hong Kong shares are expected to open 5 percent higher on Wednesday after the British bank agreed to a $340 million settlement with New York's banking regulator over allegations it hid Iran-linked transactions.

StanChart's swift settlement is expected to end one week of furor, which saw the biggest one-day slide in the British bank's Hong Kong shares last week. The stock is still down 7.5 percent before the allegations hit the bank last week.

On Wednesday, StanChart's shares were indicated to open at HK$174.10, while the benchmark Hong Kong share index was set to open down 0.82 percent.

StanChart reached the settlement on Tuesday.

Assad controls only 30 percent of Syria: former PM

AMMAN (Reuters) - Former Syrian prime minister Riyad Hijab said on Tuesday that President Bashar al-Assad's government is falling apart and controls only 30 percent of the country.

In his first public appearance since defecting to the opposition, Hijab told a news conference in Jordan that the government's spirits were low after struggling for 17 months to crush the revolt against Assad's rule.

"I tell you out of my experience and the position I occupied that the regime is collapsing, morally, materially and economically. Militarily it is crumbling as it no longer occupies more than 30 percent of Syrian territory," he said.

Hijab did not elaborate on that assertion, and took no questions from reporters.

It has been hard to independently determine the extent of territory in rebel hands as much of the fighting has occurred in outlying towns and rural areas and media access to Syria is restricted. But Assad has lost swathes of territory along Syria's northern and eastern border and fighting has weakened his hold on larger cities such as Aleppo and Homs.

Hijab added: "Oh devoted revolutionaries, your revolution has become a model of effort and sacrifice for the sake of freedom and dignity."

Hijab, who like much of the opposition comes from Syria's Sunni Muslim majority, was not part of Assad's inner circle. But as prime minister and the most senior civilian official to defect, his departure dealt a symbolic blow to the government, which is dominated by Assad's minority Alawite sect.

His defection along with that of Syria's ambassador to Iraq, both tribal figures from Deir al-Zor, boosted opposition morale but the military reality on the ground has not changed, with aerial and ground bombardment keeping rebels in check.

Hijab urged officers in the military to defect and join the opposition. He also called on rebels to work harder to unify their fractious ranks.

"Oh men of the Free Syrian Army, unify your ranks as all hopes hang on you, you are the best fighters of this world," said Hijab, who took no questions from reporters.

Syrian authorities said they had dismissed Hijab before he fled, but he told the news conference in Amman that he resigned and defected to the opposition, referring to the Assad government as an "enemy of God".

"It is my duty to wash my hands of this corrupt regime," he said.

'Insufficient' Evidence for Routine Hearing Tests, Experts Say ...

Hearing tests are cheap and effective. There are no known health harms. And they can identify older adults with compromised hearing who might benefit from using a hearing aid.

So why didn?t the United States Preventive Services Task Force?s new statement, published Monday in Annals of Internal Medicine, advise that adults age 50 and older be screened for hearing problems?

?We just don?t have enough evidence to show there would be a benefit,? said Dr. Albert Siu, a vice chairman of the task force and chairman of geriatrics at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. ?Hearing loss hasn?t been adequately addressed in the research literature.?

That?s an understatement. Although mild to severe hearing loss affects 27 million adults ages 50 and older, only one randomized controlled trial ? the gold standard of medical research ? has looked at the effect of screening for hearing problems in this population.

The results of that study, known as SAI-WHAT (Screening for Auditory Impairment-Which Hearing Assessment Test), found that adults who tested positively for hearing loss were more likely to use a hearing aid one year later. But the effects were modest, and the study had significant limitations. Notably, a sizable majority of participants reported some hearing problems before it began, so results can?t be generalized to older adults without symptoms ? the population addressed by the new task force recommendations.

This paucity of research is remarkable, given that hearing loss is the third most common health condition affecting older adults, behind hypertension and arthritis. But it?s not altogether surprising, given that this condition has traditionally been considered a natural consequence of aging and that it remains underdiagnosed and untreated in older adults.

The task force?s report ?really is a call to action to researchers? to investigate this topic in greater depth, said Jaynee Handelsman, vice president of the audiology practice at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. The organization recommends screening adults 50 and older every three years for hearing problems, but plans to review that position over the next year or so.

When the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association surveyed 2,232 older adults with AARP in September 2011, 68 percent said they believed their hearing health didn?t get adequate attention compared with other health concerns.

Although 76 percent said their hearing was of great importance to them, fewer than half had undergone a hearing test in the past five years. Nationally, fewer than 15 percent of seniors are thought to get the tests, which include brief questionnaires or physical examinations with otoscopes ? the instruments doctors stick in your ears to take a look around.

That may change as new research links hearing loss to poor cognitive functioning, falls and the onset of dementia in older adults. Now, the challenge is to determine whether early identification, and treatment with a hearing aid or other interventions, has an effect on those conditions or on older people?s quality of life, said Dr. Frank Lin, assistant professor of otology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

What?s already well established is that people who use hearing aids realize benefits, including improved ability to understand what other people are saying, communicate and negotiate social situations. Yet just over 14 percent of older adults with hearing loss use these expensive devices, which aren?t covered by Medicare or private insurance companies and which can require extensive fine-tuning, Dr. Lin reported in research published earlier this year in Archives of Internal Medicine.

Earlier this year this blog looked at reasons that seniors refuse to get hearing aids or chuck them in drawers, and found that the cost of the devices, denial and ignorance about the consequence of leaving problems unaddressed were all factors.

With its new ?I? recommendation, indicating insufficient evidence to recommend for or against hearing tests for older adults without symptoms, the preventive services task force leaves that decision up to individual physicians. Previously, in a 1996 statement, it endorsed periodic screening without specifying how often that should occur.

Given that the only detriments associated with hearing tests are ?some anxiety? and the unreimbursed medical costs patients incur, Dr. James Pacala, president of the American Geriatrics Society, said he planned to continue offering them to patients. ?I think we?ve oversold cancer screening, but in this case the harms are minimal to nonexistent, while the potential benefit is clear: When people are outfitted with hearing aids, they hear better.?

For his part, Dr. Glen Stream, president of the American Academy of Family Physicians, takes the opposite position. ?If people have symptoms or ringing in their ears or vertigo-type dizziness, they should talk to their doctors and consider hearing testing,? he said. ?But as a practicing physician, if my patient has no symptoms, am I going to be screening them for hearing loss going forward? The answer to that is no.?

In the meantime, the family physician organization has changed its position and no longer endorses periodic screening, as it had before the task force?s new recommendations.
